Diocletian's Palace is the finest Roman monument in the Adriatic — a vast imperial palace built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian between 295 and 305 AD as his retirement residence, covering 38,000m² and housing up to 9,000 people. The extraordinary thing about the palace is that people still live inside it — the palace walls enclose a living neighbourhood of apartments, restaurants, bars, shops and hotels. The Peristyle (the ceremonial courtyard of the palace) is the most atmospheric public space in Croatia.
The Peristyle is the heart of Diocletian's Palace — a magnificent colonnaded courtyard that was the ceremonial entrance to the emperor's private apartments, now the most atmospheric public square in Croatia, surrounded by cafes and restaurants. The Cathedral of Saint Domnius (the most extraordinary cathedral in Croatia — built inside the mausoleum of the Emperor Diocletian, making it the oldest cathedral in the world to have been continuously used since its construction) is the finest monument in the palace.
Marjan Hill is the finest viewpoint in Split — a forested peninsula west of the old city, with extraordinary views of the Adriatic, the islands of Brac and Hvar and the Dalmatian coast. The hill is a nature reserve and is the finest walking and cycling destination in Split. The views from the summit (178m) are the most extraordinary in the city. The hill is also home to several small medieval churches (the most atmospheric is the Church of St Nicholas, carved into the rock face) and a small zoo.
Split has excellent beaches — the most popular include Bacvice Beach (the most famous beach in Split, 10 minutes walk from the old city — famous for picigin, a traditional Dalmatian ball game played in shallow water), Kasjuni Beach (the finest beach in Split, on the south side of Marjan Hill — a beautiful pebble beach with crystal-clear water) and Bene Beach (on the north side of Marjan Hill — the best beach for families). The water around Split is crystal-clear and warm (22–26°C in summer).
Split has the finest food and nightlife in Croatia outside Dubrovnik — the most authentic Dalmatian cuisine (grilled fish, peka — meat or fish slow-cooked under a bell-shaped lid with vegetables, the finest black risotto in Croatia, excellent local wine from the Dalmatian hinterland), the most lively bar scene in Croatia (the Bacvice area and the old city are the finest areas for nightlife) and the most authentic and unpretentious atmosphere of any city in Croatia.
Split is the best ferry hub for the Dalmatian islands — ferries and catamarans depart from the Split ferry terminal to Hvar (1 hour by catamaran), Brac (50 minutes), Vis (2.5 hours), Korcula (3 hours) and Dubrovnik (4.5 hours by catamaran). Split is the finest base for island-hopping in Dalmatia — the combination of the extraordinary Roman palace, the excellent food and nightlife and the easy access to the islands makes it the best overall destination in Croatia.
Trogir is the finest day trip from Split — a beautiful, perfectly preserved medieval town on a small island 27km west of Split (30 minutes by bus), with a UNESCO World Heritage old town of extraordinary Romanesque and Gothic architecture, the finest cathedral in Dalmatia (the Cathedral of St Lawrence, with the most beautiful Romanesque portal in Croatia) and a charming, authentic atmosphere. The Krka National Park (1.5 hours north — extraordinary waterfalls and swimming) is the most popular day trip from Split.
Split Airport is 25km from the city centre (30 minutes by bus or taxi). The old city is best explored on foot. The ferry terminal is a 10-minute walk from the old city. May to June and September to October are the best times to visit — July and August are extremely crowded and hot. Book accommodation inside or near the palace walls well in advance. The Split Card covers public transport and museum entry. Split is the most convenient base in Croatia for island-hopping.
