Top 8 Things To Do in Korcula

The medieval walled town, the Marco Polo connection, the Moreska sword dance, the finest white wines in Croatia and the most romantic and atmospheric island in Dalmatia.

01

The Old Town

Korcula Old Town is the most beautiful island town in Croatia — a perfectly preserved medieval walled town on a small peninsula, with extraordinary Venetian Gothic architecture, narrow herringbone-patterned streets (designed to channel sea breezes and deflect winter winds), beautiful churches and palaces, and the most romantic and atmospheric old town in Dalmatia. The town is smaller and less crowded than Dubrovnik but almost as beautiful — the finest destination in Croatia for those who want medieval atmosphere without the crowds.

02

Marco Polo

Korcula is the claimed birthplace of Marco Polo — the most celebrated explorer in history, who is said to have been born in Korcula in 1254 (though Venice also claims him). The Marco Polo House (the alleged birthplace of the explorer, in the heart of the old town) is the most visited attraction in Korcula. The Marco Polo Tower (the finest viewpoint in the old town, with extraordinary views of the harbour and the surrounding islands) is the most photographed monument in Korcula. The Marco Polo connection gives Korcula a unique and romantic identity.

03

Moreska Sword Dance

The Moreska is the most extraordinary traditional performance in Croatia — a dramatic sword dance performed in Korcula Town, telling the story of a battle between two kings for the hand of a princess. The dance has been performed in Korcula for over 400 years and is the most important cultural tradition on the island. Performances are held every Thursday evening in summer (July and August) in the open-air theatre near the old town walls. The Moreska is the finest cultural experience in Dalmatia and is unmissable for visitors to Korcula.

04

Wine & Food

Korcula has the finest wine in Croatia — the island produces two extraordinary white wines: Grk (a unique grape variety found only on the Lumbarda peninsula of Korcula — the most distinctive and celebrated white wine in Croatia) and Posip (the most widely planted white grape on the island — a rich, full-bodied white wine with extraordinary complexity). The food on Korcula is excellent — the most celebrated dishes include grilled fish, lamb roasted under a peka, black risotto and the finest olive oil in Dalmatia.

05

Beaches & Swimming

Korcula has excellent swimming — the water is crystal-clear and warm (22–26°C in summer). The beaches are mostly pebble and rock (the island is limestone) but the water quality is extraordinary. The finest beaches include the beaches around Lumbarda (the most beautiful and sandy beaches on the island, 6km east of Korcula Town), the beaches of Vela Luka (the most sheltered bay on the island, on the west coast) and the beaches around Racisce (the most unspoilt and quietest beaches on the island).

06

Lumbarda & the Island

Lumbarda is the most charming village on Korcula — a beautiful, quiet village 6km east of Korcula Town, with the finest sandy beaches on the island (Przina Beach — the most beautiful sandy beach in the Korcula area), excellent restaurants and the most authentic and unhurried atmosphere on the island. The Grk wine vineyards around Lumbarda are the most distinctive landscape on Korcula. The island interior (the Smokvica and Cara wine villages) is the finest area for wine tourism in Dalmatia.

07

Island Hopping

Korcula is an excellent base for island hopping — the island is well-connected by ferry to Split (3 hours), Dubrovnik (2 hours by catamaran) and Hvar (1.5 hours). The nearby island of Lastovo (the most remote and unspoilt island in Dalmatia, 1.5 hours by ferry from Vela Luka) is the finest day trip from Korcula. The Peljesac Peninsula (the finest wine peninsula in Croatia, connected to the mainland opposite Korcula) is the best destination for wine tourism near Korcula.

08
