Top 8 Things To Do in Hvar

Hvar Town, the Pakleni Islands, the lavender fields, the finest nightlife in Croatia, crystal-clear water and the most glamorous and fashionable island atmosphere in the Adriatic.

01

Hvar Town

Hvar Town is the most glamorous and beautiful town in Croatia — a stunning medieval town on the west coast of the island, with a magnificent main square (the largest piazza in Dalmatia), a beautiful 16th-century Venetian loggia, the oldest public theatre in Croatia (the Arsenal Theatre, built in 1612), a magnificent fortress (the Fortica — the finest viewpoint on the island) and the most fashionable and cosmopolitan atmosphere of any town in the Adriatic. The town is the finest destination in Croatia for those who want glamour, beauty and excellent restaurants.

02

Pakleni Islands

The Pakleni Islands (Paklinski otoci) are the most beautiful archipelago in Croatia — a chain of 16 small islands immediately west of Hvar Town, with the most extraordinary secluded beaches, crystal-clear turquoise water and pine forests. The most beautiful beaches include Palmizana (the finest beach in the Pakleni Islands, with excellent restaurants), Stipanska and Vinogradisce. The islands are accessible by water taxi from Hvar Town (10–20 minutes). The Pakleni Islands are the finest swimming and snorkelling destination near Hvar.

03

Lavender Fields

Hvar is the most distinctive island in Croatia — the interior of the island is covered in lavender fields (the most extensive lavender cultivation in Croatia), which bloom in June and fill the island with an extraordinary fragrance. The lavender fields are the most distinctive and beautiful landscape on Hvar and are the finest place on the island for photography. The village of Velo Grablje (the most authentic lavender village on Hvar) and the Stari Grad Plain (a UNESCO World Heritage agricultural landscape) are the finest destinations in the Hvar interior.

04

Nightlife

Hvar has the finest nightlife in Croatia — the island is the most fashionable and cosmopolitan destination in the Adriatic and attracts a young, international crowd. The most celebrated nightlife venues include Carpe Diem (the most famous beach bar in Croatia, on the Pakleni Islands — accessible by water taxi from Hvar Town), Hula Hula (the finest sunset bar in Hvar, on the coastal path west of Hvar Town) and the bars and clubs around the main square in Hvar Town. The nightlife is at its most lively in July and August.

05

Swimming & Beaches

Hvar has excellent swimming — the water is crystal-clear and warm (22–26°C in summer). The beaches are mostly rocky and pebble (the island is limestone) but the water quality is extraordinary. The finest beaches include the Pakleni Islands (the most beautiful beaches near Hvar Town), the beaches around Jelsa (the most family-friendly resort on Hvar) and the beaches around Sucuraj (the most unspoilt and quietest beaches on the island). The water around Hvar is the clearest in the Adriatic.

06

Food & Wine

Hvar has excellent food and wine — the most celebrated Hvar dishes include grilled fish (the finest in Dalmatia), peka (meat or fish slow-cooked under a bell-shaped lid), black risotto (the most distinctive Dalmatian dish) and the finest local wine in Croatia (Plavac Mali — the most celebrated red wine in Dalmatia, produced on the steep terraces of the Hvar hinterland). The best restaurants are in Hvar Town and in Stari Grad (the oldest town on the island, with a more authentic and less touristy atmosphere).

07

Stari Grad & the Interior

Stari Grad (Old Town) is the most historic town on Hvar — a beautiful, quiet town on the north coast of the island, with the most authentic and unhurried atmosphere on Hvar. The Stari Grad Plain (a UNESCO World Heritage Site — an ancient Greek agricultural landscape that has remained unchanged for 2,400 years) is the most extraordinary cultural landscape in Croatia. The Dominican Monastery (with an extraordinary collection of ancient Greek artefacts) and the Tvrdalj (the fortified Renaissance palace of the poet Petar Hektorovic) are the finest monuments in Stari Grad.

08

Practical Tips

Hvar is accessible by catamaran from Split (1 hour to Hvar Town) or by car ferry from Split to Stari Grad (2 hours). There is no airport on Hvar — fly to Split and take the ferry. May to June and September to October are the best times to visit — July and August are extremely crowded and expensive. Book accommodation in Hvar Town well in advance for peak season. The island is car-free in Hvar Town — park at the car park above the town and walk down. Water taxis to the Pakleni Islands depart from the Hvar Town harbour.
