Call 01282 960 460The Dilmun burial mounds, the Saar archaeological site, A'Ali pottery village and the authentic local atmosphere that make Saar the most characterful area in Bahrain.
The Saar Archaeological Site is one of the most important ancient settlements in the Gulf — a remarkably well-preserved 4,000-year-old Dilmun town with streets, houses, a temple and a well, excavated by a joint Bahraini-British archaeological team. The Dilmun civilisation was one of the oldest and most sophisticated in the ancient world, and the Saar site gives an extraordinary insight into daily life in the Gulf 4,000 years ago. The site is free to enter.
The Bahrain Burial Mounds are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most extraordinary archaeological landscapes in the world — over 170,000 burial mounds covering much of northern and central Bahrain, dating from the Dilmun period (2200–1750 BC). The mounds are the largest prehistoric cemetery in the world. The A'Ali burial mounds (near Saar) are the largest and most impressive, some reaching 15 metres in height.
A'Ali is a traditional Bahraini village adjacent to Saar, famous for its pottery — one of the oldest craft traditions in Bahrain, with potters using the same techniques and clay as their Dilmun ancestors 4,000 years ago. The pottery workshops are open to visitors and the potters are happy to demonstrate their craft. The A'Ali souq has excellent local pottery, traditional Bahraini food and a genuine village atmosphere.
Al Areen Wildlife Park is 20 minutes from Saar — Bahrain's only wildlife reserve, with a collection of Arabian and African animals including Arabian oryx, gazelles, ostriches, flamingos and a variety of birds. The park is set in a desert landscape and is a pleasant half-day excursion from Saar or Manama. The adjacent Al Areen Palace & Spa is one of the finest resort hotels in Bahrain.
The Bahrain International Circuit (home of the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix) is 20 minutes from Saar — one of the finest racing circuits in the world, with the unique feature of being the first F1 circuit to host a night race. The Bahrain Grand Prix (held in March) is one of the most atmospheric events in the F1 calendar. The circuit also offers driving experiences and karting year-round.
Saar has some of the most authentic and affordable local dining in Bahrain — traditional Bahraini restaurants serving machboos (spiced rice with meat or fish), muhammar (sweet rice) and fresh seafood at very reasonable prices. The local restaurants in Saar and A'Ali are far more authentic and affordable than the hotel restaurants of Manama and Bahrain Bay. The Friday fish market at the A'Ali souq is excellent.
Saar Mall is a pleasant local shopping mall with a good selection of shops, restaurants and a cinema — a convenient and uncrowded alternative to the larger malls of Manama. The mall is popular with local Bahraini families and has a genuine local atmosphere. The Lulu Hypermarket in Saar is the best supermarket in the area.
Saar is 20 minutes from Manama city centre and 20 minutes from the Bahrain International Circuit. The Saar Archaeological Site and the A'Ali burial mounds are free to enter. The Al Areen Wildlife Park requires a ticket. Taxis and Uber are readily available. Saar is best visited as a day trip from Manama — the main hotels are in Manama and Bahrain Bay. November to March is the best time to visit.
