The Amwaj Marina is the finest marina in Bahrain — a beautifully designed waterfront with berths for private yachts and motorboats, a promenade of restaurants and cafes, a supermarket and a range of leisure facilities. The marina is the social heart of Amwaj Islands and is particularly atmospheric in the evening when the boats are illuminated and the waterfront restaurants are busy. Boat hire and water taxi services are available.
Amwaj Islands has the finest swimming and beach facilities in Bahrain — a calm, sheltered lagoon with clear water ideal for swimming, paddleboarding and kayaking, and several private beach clubs with sun loungers, pools and food and beverage service. The water is calm and warm year-round (outside the summer months) and the beaches are well maintained and uncrowded compared to the beaches of Dubai.
The Floating City is one of the most unique residential developments in the world — a community of floating homes and villas built on pontoons in the Amwaj lagoon, accessible by private boat or water taxi. The Floating City is a Bahrain landmark and the most photographed feature of Amwaj Islands. The waterfront cafes and restaurants adjacent to the Floating City are excellent.
Amwaj Islands has excellent water sports facilities — jet skiing, wakeboarding, kayaking, paddleboarding and banana boat rides are all available from the beach clubs and marina. The diving around Amwaj Islands is good — the reefs have healthy coral and a variety of reef fish, and the visibility is generally excellent. Several dive centres operate from the marina.
Amwaj Islands has the most pleasant waterfront dining scene in Bahrain — a selection of restaurants and cafes along the marina promenade serving excellent Lebanese, Indian, seafood and international cuisine. The Coral Bay Beach Club restaurant and the Amwaj Marina restaurants are the most popular. The atmosphere is relaxed and the prices are reasonable by Gulf standards.
Amwaj Islands has several excellent beach clubs — the Coral Bay Beach Club is the most popular, with a large pool, a private beach, sun loungers, a restaurant and bar and a range of water sports. The beach clubs are the finest in Bahrain and are significantly less crowded than the beach clubs of Dubai. Day passes are available for non-residents.
Amwaj Avenue is the main commercial strip on Amwaj Islands — a pleasant open-air shopping and dining area with supermarkets, pharmacies, cafes, restaurants and a range of retail shops. The avenue is the most convenient place for day-to-day shopping and is a pleasant place to spend an evening. The Amwaj Cineplex is also located here.
Amwaj Islands is 15 minutes from Manama city centre by taxi or car. The islands are connected to the mainland by a single causeway. Taxis and Uber are readily available. The best hotels are on the mainland (Four Seasons Bahrain Bay, Gulf Hotel) — Amwaj is best visited as a day trip or for a beach club day. November to March is the best time to visit.
