Bahrain is the Gulf's most characterful and authentic destination. This small island kingdom — connected to Saudi Arabia by the King Fahd Causeway — has a history stretching back 4,000 years and a culture that feels genuinely different from its more commercially developed neighbours.
The Bahrain Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Gulf. The ancient Dilmun civilisation, which flourished here from 2300 BC, left behind a remarkable fort that has been excavated to reveal layer upon layer of history. The adjacent museum is excellent.
Manama, the capital, is one of the most pleasant cities in the Gulf. The souq is authentic and atmospheric — a maze of narrow lanes selling gold, spices, textiles and traditional crafts. The Adliya district is the city's most vibrant neighbourhood, packed with excellent restaurants, art galleries and cafes. Bahrain has the most relaxed licensing laws in the Gulf, making it a popular destination for dining and nightlife.
The Bahrain International Circuit is one of the most atmospheric venues on the Formula 1 calendar. The Bahrain Grand Prix, held at night under floodlights, is a spectacular event. The circuit also hosts MotoGP and is open for driving experiences throughout the year.
Bahrain is an excellent value destination compared to Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Hotels are generally less expensive, restaurants are more affordable and the overall cost of a holiday is lower. The best time to visit is November to March, when temperatures are warm and pleasant at 17–25°C.
