The Louvre Abu Dhabi is the most extraordinary museum in the Middle East — a stunning Jean Nouvel-designed building with a vast perforated dome that filters sunlight into a rain of light over the galleries below. The museum houses a universal collection spanning 5,000 years of human history, from ancient artefacts to modern masterpieces, with works by Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Mondrian and many others. It is one of the finest museums in the world.
Saadiyat Beach is the finest natural beach in Abu Dhabi — a long, pristine stretch of white sand with calm, clear turquoise water, backed by the luxury resorts of the Park Hyatt, Jumeirah and Rixos. The beach is one of the most important hawksbill sea turtle nesting sites in the Arabian Gulf — turtles nest on the beach between May and September. The beach is beautifully maintained and far less crowded than the beaches of Dubai.
The Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas is the finest beach resort in the UAE — a low-rise, beautifully designed resort set directly on Saadiyat Beach with an extraordinary pool, excellent restaurants and a world-class spa. The resort has 306 rooms and villas and is the most refined luxury hotel in Abu Dhabi. The beach access is exceptional and the service is outstanding.
Saadiyat Island has the finest collection of luxury beach resorts in Abu Dhabi — the Park Hyatt, the Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island (with its extraordinary infinity pool overlooking the beach) and the Rixos Premium Saadiyat Island (the best all-inclusive resort in Abu Dhabi) are all exceptional. Travelpack and JTA Holidays have excellent packages to all three.
The Saadiyat Cultural District is one of the most ambitious cultural projects in the world — a planned cluster of world-class museums and cultural institutions including the Louvre Abu Dhabi (open), the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi (under construction), the Zayed National Museum (under construction) and the Abrahamic Family House (open — a mosque, church and synagogue on one site). The district will be the cultural capital of the Middle East.
Saadiyat Island is one of the most important hawksbill sea turtle nesting sites in the Arabian Gulf — turtles nest on the beach between May and September, and hatchlings emerge between July and November. The Abu Dhabi Environment Agency runs a turtle monitoring programme and guided turtle-watching experiences are available from the beach hotels during the nesting season.
Saadiyat Island has an excellent dining scene — the Louvre Abu Dhabi cafe (with views of the dome and the sea) is one of the most atmospheric dining spots in the UAE. The Safina restaurant at the Park Hyatt and the Rays Bar at the Jumeirah are both exceptional. The Saadiyat Beach Club is a popular daytime destination with a pool, beach and restaurant.
Saadiyat Island is 15 minutes from Abu Dhabi city centre and 45 minutes from Dubai. The Park Hyatt and Jumeirah are the finest hotels. The Louvre Abu Dhabi is closed on Mondays. The Saadiyat Beach Golf Club (an 18-hole Gary Player-designed course) is excellent. November to March is the best time to visit — the weather is perfect for beach and sightseeing.
