The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the most beautiful mosque in the world — a breathtaking white marble structure with 82 domes, over 1,000 columns, the world's largest hand-knotted carpet (5,627 square metres) and the world's largest chandelier. The mosque can accommodate 41,000 worshippers and is open to non-Muslim visitors. The best time to visit is at sunset when the marble glows golden, or at night when the mosque is illuminated.
The Emirates Palace is the most iconic hotel in Abu Dhabi — a vast, golden-domed palace hotel on the Corniche with 394 rooms and suites, 1.3km of private beach, 11 restaurants and bars, and a spa with 92 treatment rooms. The hotel is one of the most expensive ever built and is the finest example of Arabian luxury architecture in the world. The Afternoon Tea at the Emirates Palace is a legendary Abu Dhabi experience.
Qasr Al Watan (Palace of the Nation) is the Presidential Palace of the UAE — a magnificent white marble palace opened to the public in 2019, with extraordinary architecture, a world-class library, an exhibition on UAE governance and the most spectacular light show in the Middle East (the Palace in Motion show, held nightly). It is one of the finest palace museums in the world.
The Corniche Beach is Abu Dhabi's most popular public beach — a beautifully maintained stretch of white sand along the Corniche promenade, with calm, clear water, lifeguards, changing facilities and a pleasant promenade of cafes and restaurants behind. The beach is divided into family sections and mixed sections. The views of the Abu Dhabi skyline from the beach are extraordinary.
The Heritage Village is a reconstructed traditional Emirati village on the Corniche — a living museum of pre-oil Abu Dhabi life, with traditional houses, a souk, craft demonstrations (pottery, weaving, metalwork) and displays of traditional Emirati culture. The village is free to enter and is one of the most atmospheric cultural attractions in Abu Dhabi. The views of the Corniche and the modern skyline from the village are striking.
The Corniche has the finest collection of luxury city hotels in Abu Dhabi — the Emirates Palace (iconic), the St Regis Abu Dhabi (finest views), the Rosewood Abu Dhabi (most stylish), the Jumeirah at Etihad Towers (most dramatic architecture) and the InterContinental Abu Dhabi (best value luxury). All are within walking distance of the Corniche promenade and the main city attractions.
The Corniche has an excellent dining scene — the Bord Eau restaurant at the Shangri-La, the Hakkasan at the Emirates Palace and the Cipriani at the Yas Marina are all exceptional. The Corniche promenade has a pleasant selection of cafes and casual restaurants. The Abu Dhabi Corniche is particularly atmospheric in the evening when the city is illuminated and the temperature drops.
The Corniche is the most convenient base for exploring Abu Dhabi city — the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (15 minutes), Qasr Al Watan (10 minutes), the Heritage Village (on the Corniche) and the main shopping malls are all easily accessible. The Corniche is 45 minutes from Dubai and 20 minutes from Saadiyat Island. November to March is the best time to visit.
