Golf
Vilamoura has the finest golf in the Algarve — five world-class courses within the resort, with the Old Course (the most historic and celebrated course in the Algarve, opened in 1969) as the centrepiece. The other courses — the Pinhal, the Laguna, the Millennium and the Victoria — are all of the highest quality. The Victoria Course hosted the Portugal Masters European Tour event for many years. Vilamoura is the premier golf destination in Portugal and one of the finest in Europe.
The Marina
The Vilamoura Marina is one of the largest and most beautiful marinas in Europe — a vast, beautifully designed harbour with berths for over 1,000 boats, surrounded by restaurants, bars, boutiques and hotels. The marina is the social heart of Vilamoura and is the finest place for an evening stroll, dinner and drinks in the Algarve. The marina has a vibrant, sophisticated atmosphere and is the most photogenic part of the resort. Boat trips, fishing trips and dolphin watching excursions depart from the marina daily.
Vilamoura Beach
Vilamoura Beach (Praia de Vilamoura) is a beautiful, long stretch of golden sand directly adjacent to the marina — one of the finest and most well-facilitated beaches in the Algarve. The beach has excellent facilities (sun loungers, parasols, beach bars, water sports) and is less crowded than the beaches of Albufeira. The water is calm and clear and the beach is excellent for families. The beach is a short walk from the marina and the main resort hotels.
Casino
The Casino de Vilamoura is the finest casino in the Algarve — a large, well-appointed casino with a wide range of gaming tables and slot machines, a restaurant, a bar and regular live entertainment. The casino is open from 4pm daily and is the most popular evening entertainment venue in Vilamoura. The casino is the most sophisticated entertainment option in the Algarve and is a popular choice for a special evening out.
Marina Restaurants
The Vilamoura Marina has the finest restaurant scene in the Algarve — a concentration of excellent restaurants around the marina, ranging from traditional Portuguese seafood restaurants to international fine dining. The best include the Restaurante Akvavit (the finest Scandinavian restaurant in Portugal), the Restaurante Patio (excellent Portuguese cuisine with a beautiful marina terrace), the Restaurante Mira Mar (the finest seafood restaurant in Vilamoura) and the many excellent bars and cafes along the marina promenade.
Cerro da Vila
The Cerro da Vila is a remarkable Roman archaeological site in the heart of Vilamoura — the remains of a large Roman villa, baths and fish-salting tanks dating from the 1st to 4th centuries AD, with an excellent small museum. The site is one of the finest Roman archaeological sites in the Algarve and gives an extraordinary insight into the Roman occupation of southern Portugal. The museum has a good collection of Roman artefacts found on the site.
Accommodation
Vilamoura has the finest hotel accommodation in the Algarve — the resort has a high concentration of luxury hotels and golf resorts. The best include the Anantara Vilamoura Algarve Resort (the finest hotel in Vilamoura, with extraordinary golf and spa facilities), the Tivoli Marina Vilamoura (the most central hotel, directly on the marina) and the Hilton Vilamoura As Cascatas Golf Resort. The resort also has excellent villa and apartment accommodation.
Practical Tips
Vilamoura is 25 minutes from Faro Airport by taxi or hire car. The resort is best explored on foot — the marina, the beach and the main hotels are all within easy walking distance. Golf must be booked well in advance, especially the Old Course. May to October is the best time to visit. The marina is at its most lively in the evenings — arrive for sunset (around 8:30pm in summer) for the best atmosphere. July and August are the most crowded — book accommodation well in advance.
