Praia Dona Ana is the finest cliff beach in Portugal and one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe — a small, sheltered cove of golden sand surrounded by extraordinary golden limestone cliffs and rock formations, with crystal-clear turquoise water. The beach is accessible via a steep staircase from the clifftop car park. The scenery is extraordinary — the golden cliffs, the turquoise water and the rock formations create a landscape of exceptional beauty. The beach is small and fills up quickly in peak season — arrive early.
Ponta da Piedade is the most dramatic and spectacular coastal feature in the Algarve — a headland of extraordinary golden limestone rock formations, sea arches, sea stacks and sea caves, with extraordinary views of the Atlantic Ocean. The headland is accessible on foot from Lagos (2km south of the town) or by boat from Lagos Marina. The boat trip around the Ponta da Piedade is the finest coastal excursion in the Algarve — the sea caves and rock arches are extraordinary and can only be seen from the water.
Lagos Marina is the best base for boat trips in the western Algarve — a wide range of trips depart daily, including trips around the Ponta da Piedade sea caves (the most popular excursion in Lagos), dolphin watching trips, fishing trips, sunset cruises and kayaking tours. The Ponta da Piedade sea cave trip is unmissable — the caves and rock arches are extraordinary and are best seen from a small boat or kayak. Book boat trips in advance during peak season.
The Lagos old town is the most authentic and characterful in the Algarve — a beautiful historic town enclosed within 16th-century walls, with cobbled streets, traditional Portuguese architecture, excellent restaurants and a lively central square (Praca Gil Eanes). The old town has a much more genuine Portuguese atmosphere than the more commercial resorts of the central Algarve. The Mercado de Escravos (the first slave market in Europe, now a museum) and the Igreja de Santo Antonio (a beautiful baroque church) are the finest historic sights.
Praia do Camilo is the most dramatic and photogenic beach in Lagos — a small, secluded cove of golden sand accessible via a long wooden staircase down the cliff face, with extraordinary rock formations and crystal-clear water. The beach is one of the most photographed in Portugal and is the finest example of the dramatic cliff beach scenery of the western Algarve. The beach is small and fills up quickly — arrive early or visit in the early morning for the best experience.
Lagos has excellent restaurants — the old town has the finest dining in the western Algarve, with a concentration of good Portuguese and international restaurants. The best include the Casinha do Petisco (the finest traditional Portuguese restaurant in Lagos), the Adega da Marina (excellent grilled fish and seafood), the Bon Vivant (excellent international food with a beautiful terrace) and the many good restaurants along the Rua 25 de Abril. The local fish market (Mercado Municipal) is the best place to buy fresh seafood.
Sagres and Cape St Vincent are the most dramatic and historically significant sites in the Algarve — the southwestern tip of continental Europe, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean. Cape St Vincent (Cabo de Sao Vicente) has the most dramatic clifftop views in Portugal and is the finest sunset viewpoint in the Algarve. The Sagres Fortress (Fortaleza de Sagres) is a remarkable 15th-century fortress associated with Henry the Navigator. Both are 30 minutes from Lagos by car.
Lagos is 1 hour from Faro Airport by taxi or hire car. The town is best explored on foot — the old town, the beaches and the marina are all within easy walking distance. May to October is the best time to visit. The western Algarve is cooler and windier than the central and eastern Algarve — bring a light jacket even in summer. July and August are the most crowded — book accommodation well in advance. The beaches fill up quickly in peak season — arrive early.
