Tiwi Beach Holiday Guide

Tiwi Beach is the ideal choice for travellers who want the beauty of Kenya's South Coast without the development and bustle of Diani's main strip. It is quieter, more affordable and more authentically Kenyan than Diani, while being close enough (20 minutes by road) to access all of Diani's restaurants, watersports and nightlife when you want them.

Getting there: Fly to Mombasa (MBA) — direct flights from the UK with Kenya Airways (via Nairobi) or charter flights with Travelpack and JTA Holidays. From Mombasa airport, Tiwi is 30–40 minutes by road (taxi or hotel transfer). The Likoni ferry (connecting Mombasa island to the South Coast mainland) is part of the journey — a short, free crossing that is an experience in itself.

Accommodation: Tiwi has a range of accommodation from simple self-catering cottages (ideal for families and longer stays) to comfortable beach hotels. The self-catering cottages — many of them long-established family properties — are excellent value and give a genuine sense of living on the Kenyan coast rather than in a resort bubble.

We search Travelpack, Emirates Holidays and JTA Holidays for the best Kenya coast deals.

Top 8 Things To Do in Tiwi Beach

The reef lagoon, snorkelling, dolphin trips, colobus monkeys and Swahili culture that make Tiwi Beach the most peaceful stretch of Kenya's South Coast.

01

Tiwi's Reef Lagoon — Perfect Swimming & Snorkelling

Tiwi Beach is protected by a fringing coral reef that creates a wide, shallow lagoon of warm, clear water — ideal for swimming, paddling and snorkelling directly from the beach. The lagoon is calm and safe year-round, with no strong currents or dangerous surf, making it particularly good for families with children and less confident swimmers. At low tide, the reef flat is exposed and can be explored on foot — rock pools teem with sea urchins, starfish, small fish and crabs. At high tide, the lagoon fills to a depth of 1–2m and the coral gardens just inside the reef are accessible by snorkel. The water temperature is 26–29°C year-round. Unlike Diani's main beach, Tiwi's shoreline is largely free of beach vendors and hawkers, making for a genuinely relaxed experience.

02

The Beach Itself — Unspoilt Coral Sand

Tiwi's beach is one of the most naturally beautiful on the East African coast — a wide arc of fine white coral sand backed by casuarina trees and indigenous coastal forest, with the turquoise Indian Ocean in front and the reef visible as a line of white water on the horizon. The beach is significantly less developed than Diani — there are no beach bars, jet ski operators or persistent vendors — and the relative quiet gives it a character that feels genuinely unspoilt. The northern end of Tiwi (closest to Mombasa) is the most accessible; the southern end merges into the northern tip of Diani Beach and is the most beautiful, with the widest stretch of sand and the clearest water. Sunrise on Tiwi Beach — the Indian Ocean turning pink and gold, dhows silhouetted against the light — is one of the most beautiful sights on the Kenyan coast.

03

Dolphin Watching — Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park

Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park, 30km south of Tiwi, is one of the best places in Africa to swim with wild dolphins — spinner and bottlenose dolphins are resident in the park year-round and boat trips (departing from Shimoni, 1 hour from Tiwi) offer the chance to snorkel alongside them in the open ocean. The park also has excellent coral reefs, sea turtles, whale sharks (October to March) and a wide variety of reef fish. The trip to Kisite typically takes a full day — a dhow or speedboat from Shimoni, dolphin snorkelling in the open water, reef snorkelling inside the park, and a seafood lunch on Wasini Island (a small, car-free Swahili island with no electricity and extraordinary fresh crab). The Kisite trip is one of the highlights of any South Coast Kenya holiday.

04

Colobus Monkey Forest Walks

The coastal forest behind Tiwi Beach is home to the Angolan colobus monkey — a striking black-and-white primate with a long white mantle and tail that lives in the forest canopy and is endemic to the East African coast. The Colobus Conservation centre near Diani (20 minutes from Tiwi) runs guided forest walks and has a rehabilitation programme for injured and orphaned colobus monkeys. The forest walks are excellent for birdwatching as well as primates — the coastal forest is one of the most biodiverse habitats in Kenya, with over 200 bird species recorded. Other wildlife in the forest includes vervet monkeys, bushbabies (visible on night walks), monitor lizards and a wide variety of butterflies and insects.

05

Shimba Hills National Reserve — Sable Antelope & Waterfalls

Shimba Hills National Reserve, 30km inland from Tiwi, is one of Kenya's most underrated wildlife destinations — a forested plateau above the coastal plain that is the only place in Kenya where sable antelope can be seen. The reserve also has elephant, buffalo, leopard, colobus monkey and over 200 bird species, and the Sheldrick Falls (a 20m waterfall into a forest pool) are one of the most beautiful natural features on the South Coast. A half-day or full-day trip to Shimba Hills from Tiwi is an excellent complement to a beach holiday — the reserve is rarely crowded and the combination of forest, savannah and coastal views is beautiful. The reserve is best visited in the early morning when wildlife is most active.

06

Wasini Island & Shimoni — Swahili History

Wasini Island, accessible by dhow from Shimoni (1 hour from Tiwi), is a small, car-free Swahili island with a fascinating history — the ruins of an 18th-century Swahili settlement, a coral garden (a natural formation of coral pillars above the waterline), and a village of 2,000 people who have lived on the island for generations. The island has no electricity, no cars and no tourist infrastructure beyond a handful of restaurants serving fresh seafood — the pace of life is extraordinary. Shimoni itself has the Shimoni Slave Caves — a network of coral caves used as a holding point for enslaved people during the 19th-century Arab slave trade, now a sobering and important historical site. The combination of Wasini Island, the slave caves and the Kisite Marine Park makes for one of the most rewarding day trips on the Kenyan coast.

07

Watersports — Kite Surfing, Kayaking & Stand-Up Paddleboarding

While Tiwi is quieter than Diani for watersports, the reef lagoon is ideal for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding — the calm, clear water and the absence of motorised craft makes for a peaceful experience. Kite surfing is available at the southern end of Tiwi where it merges with Diani — the consistent south-easterly trade winds (June to September) make this stretch of coast one of the best kite surfing destinations in Africa. Diani's watersports operators (20 minutes by road) offer the full range of activities — deep-sea fishing, jet skiing, glass-bottom boat trips, windsurfing and scuba diving — and are easily accessible from a Tiwi base. The combination of Tiwi's peaceful lagoon for relaxed water activities and Diani's operators for more adventurous watersports gives the best of both worlds.

08

Combining Tiwi with a Kenya Safari

Tiwi Beach is the perfect end to a Kenya safari — the classic combination of 3–4 nights on safari (Maasai Mara, Amboseli or Samburu) followed by 4–5 nights on the beach is one of the most satisfying holiday itineraries in Africa. The contrast between the drama of the savannah and the peace of the Indian Ocean coast is extraordinary. Nairobi to Mombasa is a 45-minute domestic flight (Air Kenya or Jambojet, from approximately £60 one way), making the transition seamless. Most safari operators can arrange the full circuit — park to coast — as a single itinerary. Tiwi's quieter, more affordable accommodation makes it a particularly good choice for the beach portion of a safari-and-beach combination.
