Galu Beach is the choice for travellers who want the very best of Kenya's South Coast — the most beautiful beach, the best kite surfing, the most carefully designed accommodation and the greatest concentration of natural highlights (reef, forest, turtles, dolphins) in a single area. It is slightly further from Mombasa than Diani's main strip (45–55 minutes by road) but the extra distance is well worth it.
Getting there: Fly to Mombasa (MBA) — direct flights from the UK with Kenya Airways (via Nairobi) or charter flights with Travelpack and JTA Holidays. From Mombasa airport, Galu is 45–55 minutes by road (taxi or hotel transfer). The Likoni ferry crossing is part of the journey.
Kite surfing: The kite surfing season at Galu Kinondo runs from June to September. Outside this window, the winds are lighter and less consistent — good for beginners but less exciting for experienced riders. The January to March dry season is the best time for snorkelling, diving and turtle watching.

Galu Kinondo is one of the finest kite surfing destinations in Africa — a wide, shallow lagoon with a sandy bottom, consistent south-easterly trade winds (averaging 15–25 knots from June to September) and warm, clear water. The lagoon's shallow depth (knee to waist deep over a large area at low tide) makes it ideal for beginners learning to kite surf — falls are soft and the water is warm. For experienced riders, the flat water of the lagoon and the waves breaking on the outer reef provide a variety of conditions. Several kite surfing schools operate at Galu Kinondo, offering lessons and equipment hire. The kite surfing season (June to September) coincides with the south-east monsoon — the winds are reliable, the skies are clear and the beach is at its most dramatic, with the trade wind whipping spray off the wave crests.
Galu Beach is widely regarded as the most beautiful section of the entire Diani coast — the sand is at its finest and whitest here, the beach is at its widest (up to 80m from the waterline to the vegetation line at low tide), and the development is lower-key and more carefully managed than the busier northern sections of Diani. The reef is closer to shore at Galu than anywhere else on the coast — the line of white water is visible just 200–300m offshore, and the lagoon between the beach and the reef is a vivid turquoise. The beach is largely free of vendors and hawkers, and the boutique hotels and private villas that line the shore are set back in the coastal vegetation rather than crowding the beach. Sunrise and sunset at Galu are extraordinary — the Indian Ocean light at the golden hours is some of the most beautiful in East Africa.
The coral reef at Galu is closer to shore than anywhere else on the Diani coast — accessible by a short swim or kayak from the beach. The reef at Galu is in excellent condition, with a variety of hard and soft corals, reef fish (parrotfish, angelfish, clownfish, triggerfish, moray eels), sea turtles, octopus and occasional whale sharks (October to March). The clarity of the water at Galu — particularly in the January to March dry season — is exceptional, with visibility of 15–20m on good days. For more serious diving, the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park (30 minutes by boat from Galu) has pristine coral gardens, dolphins, manta rays and a wide variety of pelagic fish. Several dive operators based at Galu offer PADI courses, fun dives and snorkelling trips.
The Kinondo Forest, immediately behind Galu Beach, is one of the most important remaining patches of coastal forest on the Kenyan coast — a fragment of the ancient East African coastal forest that once stretched from Somalia to Mozambique. The forest is home to the Angolan colobus monkey (a striking black-and-white primate endemic to the East African coast), vervet monkeys, bushbabies, monitor lizards and over 150 bird species including the Amani sunbird, Fischer's turaco and the African crowned eagle. The Kinondo Kwetu eco-lodge runs guided forest walks that combine wildlife observation with an introduction to the forest's ecology and the Digo community's relationship with it. The forest is also a sea turtle nesting site — green and hawksbill turtles nest on the Galu beach from November to March.
Galu Beach is one of the most important sea turtle nesting beaches on the Kenyan coast — green turtles and hawksbill turtles nest here from November to March, emerging from the sea at night to lay their eggs in the sand above the high tide line. The Local Ocean Trust (based at Watamu, but with a presence on the South Coast) monitors the nesting turtles and offers guided night walks to observe nesting activity without disturbing the turtles. Hatchlings emerge 60 days after laying and make their way to the sea — witnessing a mass hatchling emergence is one of the most extraordinary natural events on the Kenyan coast. The boutique hotels at Galu are committed to turtle conservation — lights are dimmed during nesting season and beach furniture is removed at night to avoid disorienting nesting females.
Galu Beach has the most discerning and design-conscious accommodation on the Kenyan coast — a collection of boutique hotels and private villas that set the standard for beach hospitality in East Africa. The Kinondo Kwetu eco-lodge is one of the most celebrated properties in Kenya — a family-run Swedish-Kenyan lodge with 14 cottages in the coastal forest, a private beach, horses, kayaks and an extraordinary commitment to sustainability and community. The Alfajiri villas (three private villas with private pools, butlers and chefs) are among the most exclusive beach properties in Africa. Several other boutique hotels and private villa rentals complete the Galu offering — all characterised by careful design, excellent food and a genuine sense of place.
Galu's position at the southern end of the Diani coast makes it the closest point on the beach to the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park — the best place in Africa to swim with wild dolphins. Boat trips from Galu to Kisite (30 minutes by speedboat) offer snorkelling with spinner and bottlenose dolphins, reef snorkelling in the marine park, and lunch on Wasini Island. Whale sharks — the largest fish in the ocean, up to 12m long and completely harmless — are present in the waters off Galu from October to March, and snorkelling or diving with them is one of the most extraordinary marine experiences in East Africa. The whale shark season coincides with the turtle nesting season, making October to March the most wildlife-rich time to visit Galu.
Horseback riding on Galu Beach at sunrise or sunset is one of the most memorable experiences on the Kenyan coast — cantering along the waterline with the Indian Ocean on one side and the coastal forest on the other, with the reef visible offshore and the sky turning pink and gold. The Kinondo Kwetu eco-lodge has a stable of well-trained horses and offers rides for all levels of experience, from complete beginners to experienced riders. The beach rides typically last 1–2 hours and can be combined with a swim in the lagoon. Rides through the Kinondo Forest (on forest tracks rather than the beach) are also available and offer the chance to see colobus monkeys and coastal birds from horseback. Horseback riding at Galu is one of the most distinctive and romantic activities on the entire Kenyan coast.
