Top 8 Things To Do in Wadi Rum

The Jeep tours, Bedouin camps, camel treks and extraordinary stargazing that make Wadi Rum one of the most unforgettable destinations on earth.

01

The Desert Landscape

Wadi Rum is the most dramatic desert landscape on earth — a vast protected area of 720 square kilometres of towering sandstone and granite mountains, sweeping red sand dunes, narrow canyons and natural rock arches. The colours change constantly through the day, from deep red at sunrise to golden orange at sunset. The scale and silence of the desert are overwhelming.

02

Overnight Bedouin Camp

Sleeping overnight in a Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum is one of the great travel experiences — a night under an extraordinary canopy of stars in the silence of the desert, with traditional Bedouin food, tea around the fire and the chance to experience the desert at its most magical. Luxury bubble tents with transparent roofs for stargazing are available at the finest camps.

03

Jeep Tours

Jeep tours are the best way to explore Wadi Rum — Bedouin guides drive 4WD vehicles through the desert to the key sites: Lawrence's Spring, Khazali Canyon, the red sand dunes, the natural rock arches and the ancient rock inscriptions. Half-day and full-day tours are available from the visitor centre. The guides have an extraordinary knowledge of the desert.

04

Stargazing

Wadi Rum has some of the finest stargazing in the world — the complete absence of light pollution and the clear desert skies create an extraordinary night sky. The Milky Way is clearly visible on most nights and the density of stars is overwhelming. The luxury bubble tent camps are designed specifically for stargazing, with transparent roofs above the beds.

05

Camel Trekking

Camel trekking through Wadi Rum is one of the most atmospheric ways to experience the desert — a slow, meditative journey through the red sand on the traditional transport of the Bedouin. Short rides and multi-hour treks are available. The experience of crossing the dunes on camelback at sunset is extraordinary.

06

Rock Climbing

Wadi Rum is one of the finest rock climbing destinations in the Middle East — the towering sandstone mountains offer hundreds of routes from beginner to expert. The climbing is on beautiful red sandstone with extraordinary views of the desert. Several Bedouin guides are trained climbing instructors and offer guided ascents of the main peaks.

07

Lawrence of Arabia

Wadi Rum was the base for T.E. Lawrence during the Arab Revolt of 1917–18 and the filming location for the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia. Lawrence's Spring (Ain Lawrence) and the Seven Pillars of Wisdom rock formation are named after him. The desert landscape is unchanged from Lawrence's time and the connection to his story adds a powerful historical dimension.

08

Practical Tips

Wadi Rum is best visited as an overnight stay — a day trip from Petra or Aqaba does not do justice to the desert. The Jordan Pass includes entry to Wadi Rum. The best time to visit is spring (March–May) or autumn (September–November) when temperatures are comfortable. Summer temperatures can exceed 40°C. Book Bedouin camps in advance during peak season.
