Top 8 Things To Do in Dead Sea

The floating experience, mineral mud therapy and luxury spa resorts that make the Dead Sea one of the most extraordinary and indulgent destinations in the world.

01

Floating in the Dead Sea

Floating in the Dead Sea is one of the most extraordinary physical experiences in the world — the water is so dense with salt (approximately 34% salinity, ten times saltier than the ocean) that the human body floats effortlessly without any effort. The sensation of lying back in the water and floating without sinking is completely unlike any other swimming experience. Reading a newspaper while floating is the classic photograph.

02

Mineral Mud Therapy

The black mineral mud of the Dead Sea has been used for therapeutic purposes for over 2,000 years — rich in magnesium, calcium, potassium and bromide, the mud is believed to have extraordinary benefits for skin conditions, joint pain and general wellbeing. Coating yourself in the black mud and letting it dry in the sun before washing it off in the sea is a quintessential Dead Sea experience.

03

Luxury Spa Resorts

The Jordanian shore of the Dead Sea has some of the finest luxury spa resorts in the Middle East — the Kempinski Hotel Ishtar, the Marriott Dead Sea Resort and the Mövenpick Resort & Spa are all exceptional. The resorts have private beach access, world-class spa facilities using Dead Sea minerals, multiple restaurants and extraordinary views of the sea and the Israeli hills beyond.

04

Therapeutic Properties

The Dead Sea has extraordinary therapeutic properties — the high mineral content of the water and mud, the low UV radiation (the thick atmosphere at 430m below sea level filters UV rays), the high oxygen content and the bromine-rich air all contribute to a uniquely therapeutic environment. The Dead Sea has been a destination for health tourism since the time of Herod the Great.

05

Wadi Mujib

Wadi Mujib is a spectacular canyon nature reserve on the Dead Sea shore — a dramatic gorge carved by the Mujib River through the desert mountains, with a series of hiking trails through the canyon including the famous Siq Trail (a wade through the river gorge). The canyon is one of the most dramatic natural landscapes in Jordan and is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

06

Mount Nebo

Mount Nebo, just 30 minutes from the Dead Sea, is one of the most sacred sites in the Middle East — the mountain from which Moses is said to have seen the Promised Land before his death. The summit has a Byzantine church with extraordinary mosaic floors and panoramic views of the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and, on clear days, Jerusalem.

07

Baptism Site

Bethany Beyond the Jordan (Al-Maghtas) is the site where Jesus is believed to have been baptised by John the Baptist — a UNESCO World Heritage Site just 45 minutes from the Dead Sea. The site has Byzantine and Roman churches, ancient baptism pools and a peaceful, sacred atmosphere. It is one of the most important Christian pilgrimage sites in the world.

08

Practical Tips

The Dead Sea is best visited in the cooler months (October to April) — summer temperatures regularly exceed 40°C. Do not shave or wax before entering the water as the salt is extremely painful on broken skin. Do not get the water in your eyes. Rinse thoroughly after floating. The luxury resorts provide towels, showers and mud stations on their private beaches.
