Top 8 Things To Do in Rome

The Colosseum, the Vatican, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, the extraordinary food and the most intoxicating city atmosphere in the world.

01

The Colosseum & Roman Forum

The Colosseum is the most iconic ancient monument in the world — a vast amphitheatre completed in 80 AD, capable of holding 50,000 spectators, where gladiatorial contests and public spectacles were held for 400 years. The adjacent Roman Forum (the political and commercial heart of ancient Rome) and the Palatine Hill (the most exclusive residential area of ancient Rome, with extraordinary views of the Forum) are the finest ancient sites in the world. Book tickets online well in advance — the queues without a ticket are enormous.

02

The Vatican & Sistine Chapel

The Vatican is the most extraordinary concentration of art and history in the world — the Vatican Museums (the largest art collection in existence, accumulated over 500 years by the popes), the Sistine Chapel (Michelangelo's ceiling, painted 1508–12, the most celebrated artwork in the world) and St Peter's Basilica (the largest church in the world, with Michelangelo's Pieta and Bernini's extraordinary baldachin). The Vatican is the single most important cultural destination in Europe. Book tickets online well in advance.

03

The Pantheon & Piazzas

The Pantheon is the best-preserved ancient Roman building in the world — a temple completed in 125 AD, with the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world (43.3m diameter), still in perfect condition after 1,900 years. The Trevi Fountain (the most famous fountain in the world, completed in 1762) and the Spanish Steps (the most famous staircase in the world) are the most visited monuments in Rome. The Piazza Navona (the most beautiful Baroque piazza in Rome, with Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers) is the finest piazza in the city.

04

Food & Restaurants

Rome is the finest food city in Italy — the home of cacio e pepe (pasta with pecorino and black pepper), carbonara (pasta with egg, guanciale and pecorino), coda alla vaccinara (oxtail stew), supplì (fried rice balls) and the finest pizza al taglio (pizza by the slice) in the world. The best neighbourhoods for food are Trastevere (the most atmospheric), Testaccio (the most traditional, near the old slaughterhouse) and the Jewish Ghetto (the finest Jewish-Roman cuisine in the world). Gelato from Fatamorgana or Giolitti is unmissable.

05

Trastevere & Neighbourhoods

Trastevere is the most atmospheric and characterful neighbourhood in Rome — a maze of narrow cobbled lanes, ivy-covered buildings, beautiful churches (Santa Maria in Trastevere, the oldest church in Rome) and excellent restaurants and bars. The neighbourhood is the finest place in Rome for an evening out. The Jewish Ghetto (the oldest Jewish community in Europe, with extraordinary food), the Prati neighbourhood (near the Vatican, with excellent restaurants) and the Testaccio neighbourhood (the most authentic working-class Roman neighbourhood) are all excellent.

06

Day Trips

Rome is an excellent base for day trips — the most popular include Pompeii and Herculaneum (2.5 hours south by train — the most extraordinary ancient sites in Italy, preserved by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD), Tivoli (1 hour east — the extraordinary Villa d'Este gardens and the ancient Hadrian's Villa), Ostia Antica (45 minutes west — the best-preserved ancient Roman port city in the world) and the Castelli Romani (1 hour south — beautiful hill towns with excellent wine and food).

07

Nightlife & Culture

Rome has excellent nightlife and cultural life — the most atmospheric areas for an evening out are Trastevere, the Campo de' Fiori (the most lively piazza in Rome in the evening) and the Pigneto neighbourhood (the most fashionable and alternative area in Rome). The Rome Opera (Teatro dell'Opera di Roma) is the finest opera house in Italy outside Milan. The summer outdoor concerts at the Baths of Caracalla are the most extraordinary concert venue in the world. The Rome Film Festival (October) is the most important film festival in Italy.

08

Practical Tips

Rome has two airports — Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci, 30 minutes from the centre by train) and Ciampino (45 minutes by bus). The city centre is best explored on foot — the main sights are within walking distance of each other. Book the Colosseum, Vatican Museums and Borghese Gallery tickets online well in advance — they sell out weeks ahead in peak season. April to June and September to October are the best times to visit — July and August are extremely hot (31°C+) and crowded. The Roma Pass (48h or 72h) covers public transport and museum entry.
