The medieval walled city of Rhodes is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe — a magnificent fortified city built by the Knights of St John in the 14th century, with the famous Street of the Knights, the Palace of the Grand Master, the Archaeological Museum and a labyrinth of atmospheric streets, restaurants and shops. The city is extraordinary.
Lindos is the most beautiful village in Rhodes — a charming whitewashed village on the east coast with a magnificent acropolis (with a Temple of Athena and a Knights' castle) on the clifftop above the village, a beautiful sheltered bay (St Paul's Bay) and a labyrinth of atmospheric streets. The view from the acropolis is one of the finest in Greece.
Prasonisi, at the southern tip of Rhodes, is one of the finest windsurfing destinations in Europe — a narrow sandbar connecting the mainland to a small island, with the Aegean Sea on one side (choppy, for advanced windsurfers) and the Mediterranean on the other (flat, for beginners). The conditions are excellent from June to September.
Tsambika is the finest beach on the east coast of Rhodes — a long, beautiful stretch of golden sand with calm, clear water and a dramatic clifftop monastery above. The beach is one of the most beautiful in the Dodecanese and is popular with families and couples.
Faliraki is the most popular resort on Rhodes — a lively, well-developed resort on the east coast with a long beach, excellent water park (Faliraki Water Park), good restaurants and a vibrant nightlife. It is the best choice for those who want a lively, sociable holiday.
Rhodes holds the record for the most sunshine hours in Greece and one of the highest in Europe — over 300 days of sunshine per year. The island has a very long season (April to November) and the weather is reliably warm and sunny from May to October.
The Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes) is one of the most unusual natural attractions in Rhodes — a beautiful wooded valley that is home to thousands of Jersey tiger moths (which look like butterflies) from June to September. The valley is a pleasant half-day excursion from the main resorts.
Rhodes has an excellent food scene — fresh seafood, grilled meats, meze and the local speciality pitaroudia (chickpea fritters). The restaurants in the medieval city and in Lindos are the finest. The local wine (from the Emery winery) is excellent.
