Tigaki and Marmari are the finest beaches on Kos — long, wide stretches of fine white sand with calm, shallow water ideal for families. The beaches are on the north coast and are the most popular on the island. The water is calm and clear and the beach facilities are excellent.
Kos is one of the finest windsurfing destinations in Greece — the north coast beaches (Marmari, Mastichari) have consistent winds and flat water ideal for beginners and intermediate windsurfers. The Kos Windsurf Club at Marmari is one of the best in Greece. The conditions are excellent from June to September.
Kos Town is the most charming town in the Dodecanese — a beautiful mix of ancient ruins (the Agora, the Casa Romana, the ancient gymnasium), medieval architecture (the Castle of the Knights) and a lively modern town with excellent restaurants, bars and shops. The Hippocrates Plane Tree, under which Hippocrates allegedly taught, is in the centre of the town.
Kos is the most cycle-friendly island in Greece — the island is flat and has an extensive network of cycle paths. Cycling is the most popular way to explore the island and bike hire is available everywhere. The cycle path from Kos Town to Tigaki (8km) is the most popular route and passes through beautiful countryside.
Kefalos, at the western end of Kos, is the most beautiful and least developed area of the island — a charming village with extraordinary views and the famous Paradise Beach (Bubble Beach), a beautiful cove with calm, clear water. The area is excellent for those who want a quieter, more natural experience.
Kos is just 4km from the Turkish coast — day trips to Bodrum (Turkey) are available by ferry (approximately 1 hour) and are one of the most popular excursions from Kos. Bodrum has an excellent market, a beautiful castle and a lively waterfront. The day trip is an excellent way to experience two countries in one day.
Kardamena is the most popular resort in Kos — a lively, well-developed resort on the south coast with a good beach, excellent water sports, good restaurants and a vibrant nightlife. It is the best choice for young travellers and those who want a lively, sociable holiday.
Kos has an excellent food scene — fresh seafood, grilled meats, meze and the local specialities of the Dodecanese. The restaurants in Kos Town are the finest. The local loukoumades (honey doughnuts) and fresh fish are excellent. The local wine and ouzo are very good.
