Fort King George is one of the most impressive historic sites in Tobago — a magnificent 18th-century fort perched on a hilltop overlooking Scarborough, with spectacular views over the town, the harbour and the Caribbean Sea. The fort was built by the British in 1777 and is one of the best-preserved colonial forts in the Caribbean. The fort houses the Tobago Museum and is surrounded by beautiful botanical gardens.
The Tobago Museum is housed in the former barracks of Fort King George — a fascinating collection of artefacts, documents and exhibits telling the story of Tobago's history and culture, from the indigenous Amerindian peoples through the colonial period to the present day. The museum has a wonderful collection of Amerindian pottery, colonial-era weapons and documents, and exhibits on the island's natural history.
Scarborough Market is one of the most vibrant and colourful markets in the Caribbean — a lively, bustling market in the heart of the town, selling fresh produce, spices, crafts and local food. The market is a wonderful place to experience authentic Tobagonian life and to buy local produce, including fresh fruit, vegetables, spices and handmade crafts. The atmosphere is lively and friendly.
Scarborough is the centre of Tobago's two major annual festivals. The Tobago Carnival takes place in February, on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, with street parties, music, dancing and parades across Scarborough and Roxborough. The Tobago Heritage Festival in July showcases the island's rich culture and traditions through dance, music and cuisine.
Scarborough is the departure point for the T&T Spirit ferry to Trinidad — a 2.5-hour crossing that connects Tobago to its sister island. The ferry runs several times a day and is a popular way to combine a Tobago holiday with a visit to Trinidad. The ferry terminal is in the centre of Scarborough, close to the market and the main shopping area.
