A secluded golden beach, excellent snorkelling, ancient rainforest and the charm of nearby Castara village.
Englishman's Bay is one of the most beautiful and secluded beaches in Tobago — a stunning crescent of golden sand on the leeward coast, between Castara and Parlatuvier, with gorgeous tropical greenery tumbling down to the water's edge and crystal-clear turquoise water. The beach is relatively undeveloped and uncrowded, giving it a wonderfully unspoilt, off-the-beaten-track atmosphere that is increasingly rare in the Caribbean.
The clear water at Englishman's Bay is excellent for snorkelling, with a wide variety of marine life visible just offshore. The rocky edges of the bay are particularly good for snorkelling, with colourful fish, sea fans and coral formations. The beach is relatively undeveloped, so the marine environment is in excellent condition. Snorkelling equipment can be hired from Castara, just along the coast.
Englishman's Bay is one of the best access points for the Main Ridge Forest Reserve — the oldest protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere, established in 1776. The forest is home to over 200 species of birds, including the rare white-tailed sabrewing hummingbird, as well as armadillos, agoutis and iguanas. The road above the bay passes through the forest, and guided nature walks are available.
Castara is a charming fishing village just along the coast from Englishman's Bay — a beautiful bay with excellent snorkelling, a small beach and a wonderfully authentic, unhurried atmosphere. The village has a small selection of restaurants and guesthouses, and is a perfect base for exploring the leeward coast of Tobago. The combination of Englishman's Bay and Castara makes for a wonderful day out.
Englishman's Bay is located on the leeward (northwest) coast of Tobago, about 45 minutes' drive from Crown Point. The bay is accessible by car or taxi along the Northside Road, which passes through some of the most beautiful scenery in Tobago. The beach is signposted from the road and there is a small car park. The drive itself is a highlight, with spectacular views of the rainforest and the Caribbean Sea.
