Things To Do in Castara

A beautiful bay, excellent snorkelling, fresh seafood and the authentic charm of a Tobago fishing village.

Castara Bay & Beach

Castara Bay is one of the most beautiful and authentic spots on the leeward coast of Tobago — a gorgeous bay with a small golden beach, calm clear water and a wonderfully unhurried atmosphere. The beach is ideal for swimming and snorkelling, with a wide variety of marine life visible just offshore. The bay is sheltered from the open sea, making it safe for children and non-swimmers.

Snorkelling

The water at Castara is crystal-clear and excellent for snorkelling, with colourful fish, sea fans and coral formations visible just offshore. The rocky edges of the bay are particularly good for snorkelling. The marine environment at Castara is in excellent condition, thanks to the relatively low level of tourist development in the area. Snorkelling equipment can be hired locally.

Fresh Seafood

Castara is one of the best places in Tobago to eat fresh seafood — traditional fishing boats land their catch in the bay daily, and the village has a small selection of excellent restaurants and beach bars serving fresh fish, lobster, crab and other seafood. The atmosphere is wonderfully informal and authentic, with local fishermen and their families going about their daily lives alongside visitors.

Englishman's Bay

Englishman's Bay is just a short drive along the coast from Castara — one of the most beautiful and secluded beaches in Tobago, with a stunning crescent of golden sand and crystal-clear water. The combination of Castara and Englishman's Bay makes for a wonderful day on the leeward coast, with two very different but equally beautiful beaches to enjoy.

Village Life

Castara is one of the most authentic and charming villages in Tobago — a genuine fishing community with a wonderfully unhurried pace of life. The village has a small selection of guesthouses, restaurants and bars, and is a perfect base for exploring the leeward coast. The sunsets over the bay are spectacular, and the village comes alive in the evenings with local music and the smell of fresh seafood cooking.
