Things To Do in Union Island

Kite surfing, Tobago Cays day trips and the unspoilt gateway to the southern Grenadines.

Clifton Harbour & Yachting

Clifton Harbour is the main town and harbour of Union Island — a lively, colourful hub for yachts, inter-island ferries and fishing boats. The harbour is one of the most popular anchorages in the southern Grenadines and is the main departure point for day trips to the Tobago Cays. The waterfront has a good selection of restaurants, bars and chandleries serving the yachting community.

Kite Surfing

Union Island is one of the best kite surfing destinations in the Caribbean — the consistent trade winds and flat, shallow water on the eastern side of the island provide ideal conditions for kite surfing and windsurfing. The Union Island Kite Surfing School offers lessons and equipment hire for all levels. The annual Union Island Kite Surfing Festival attracts competitors from across the Caribbean.

Tobago Cays Day Trips

Union Island is the closest inhabited island to the Tobago Cays National Marine Park — making it the ideal base for day trips to the Cays. Catamaran and yacht day trips depart from Clifton Harbour, with snorkelling with sea turtles, exploring the uninhabited islands and a barbecue on the beach. The Tobago Cays are about 30 minutes by boat from Union Island.

Chatham Bay

Chatham Bay is one of the most beautiful and peaceful anchorages in the Grenadines — a stunning, secluded bay on the west coast of Union Island, surrounded by lush green hills and fringed with palm trees. The bay is accessible only by boat and has a wonderfully unspoilt, tranquil atmosphere. A small beach bar serves fresh seafood and cold drinks to visiting yachts.

Mount Taboi & Natural Beauty

Union Island has a wonderfully rugged, dramatic landscape — dominated by the twin peaks of Mount Taboi and Mount Olympus. The hike to the summit of Mount Taboi offers spectacular views over the southern Grenadines, with the Tobago Cays, Mayreau, Canouan and Mustique all visible on a clear day. Union Island is known for its unspoilt, non-commercialised character — a refreshing contrast to some of the more developed Caribbean islands.
