History, culture and the vibrant heart of St Vincent's picturesque capital city.
Fort Charlotte is a magnificent 18th-century hilltop fort overlooking Kingstown harbour — one of the most impressive historic sites in the Eastern Caribbean. Built by the British in 1806, the fort offers spectacular panoramic views over Kingstown, the harbour and the Grenadines stretching south. The fort has a series of paintings depicting the history of the Black Caribs, the indigenous people of St Vincent.
The Kingstown Botanical Gardens are one of the oldest botanical gardens in the Western Hemisphere — established in 1765, making them the oldest in the Americas. The gardens are home to a magnificent collection of tropical plants, including a breadfruit tree grown from a cutting of the original tree brought to the Caribbean by Captain Bligh of the Bounty. The gardens are also home to the St Vincent parrot, the national bird.
Kingstown has one of the most attractive town centres in the Eastern Caribbean — a wonderful collection of 19th-century Georgian and Victorian buildings lining the waterfront and the narrow streets of the old town. The Kingstown market is the most vibrant in the Grenadines, with stalls selling fresh produce, spices, crafts and local food. The covered market building is a fine example of Victorian colonial architecture.
St Mary's Cathedral is one of the most beautiful churches in the Caribbean — a stunning 19th-century Roman Catholic cathedral in the heart of Kingstown, with a magnificent interior featuring famous stained glass windows. The cathedral is a fine example of Romanesque architecture and is one of the most photographed buildings in St Vincent. The nearby St George's Anglican Cathedral is also worth a visit.
Kingstown harbour is the hub of life in St Vincent — a busy, colourful port with ferries to Bequia and the other Grenadine islands, fishing boats and yachts. The harbour is the departure point for day trips to Young Island, Bequia and the other Grenadines. The Bequia Express ferry departs from Kingstown several times a day, making Bequia an easy day trip from the capital.
