Baa Atoll Holiday Guide

Baa Atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the most extraordinary marine destination in the Maldives. Hanifaru Bay — where hundreds of manta rays and whale sharks gather between June and November — is the greatest marine spectacle on earth.

The atoll is home to the Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru and Amilla Maldives — two of the most celebrated resorts in the Indian Ocean. The coral reefs are among the most pristine in the Maldives.

Access is by seaplane from Malé (30 minutes) — the transfer itself is one of the great travel experiences. The best time for Hanifaru Bay is June to November; for beach holidays, November to April.

Top 8 Things To Do in Baa Atoll

The marine wonders, UNESCO status and ultra-luxury resorts that make Baa Atoll the most extraordinary atoll in the Maldives.

01

Hanifaru Bay — World's Greatest Marine Spectacle

Hanifaru Bay is the most extraordinary marine spectacle on earth — a small bay in Baa Atoll where hundreds of manta rays and whale sharks gather between June and November to feed on the massive plankton blooms. On peak days, over 200 manta rays can be seen feeding simultaneously. Access is strictly controlled to protect the ecosystem — only snorkelling is permitted (no scuba diving).

02

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

Baa Atoll was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2011 — one of only a handful of marine areas in the world to receive this status. The designation recognises the extraordinary biodiversity of the atoll, including its coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves and the remarkable marine life that depends on them.

03

Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru

The Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru is one of the most celebrated resorts in the Maldives — a stunning island resort with overwater and beach villas, an extraordinary marine biology centre, world-class diving and the finest service in the Indian Ocean. The resort's proximity to Hanifaru Bay makes it the premier base for the manta ray experience.

04

Pristine Coral Reefs

Baa Atoll has some of the most pristine coral reefs in the Maldives — the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status has helped protect the reefs from damage, and the coral coverage and diversity is exceptional. The diving and snorkelling at the house reefs of the atoll's resorts is among the finest in the Indian Ocean.

05

Amilla Maldives

Amilla Maldives is one of the most stylish and contemporary resorts in the Maldives — a private island with extraordinary overwater and beach residences, exceptional food and a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere. The resort is a favourite with celebrities and discerning travellers seeking a more modern Maldivian experience.

06

Seaplane Transfer

The seaplane transfer to Baa Atoll is one of the great travel experiences — a 30-minute flight over the extraordinary patchwork of turquoise atolls, white sand islands and coral reefs of the Maldives. The aerial views are extraordinary and the seaplane landing on the lagoon is a memorable arrival.

07

Remote & Exclusive

Baa Atoll's remoteness — accessible only by seaplane — means it attracts a more exclusive clientele and has a more peaceful, unspoilt atmosphere than the more accessible atolls closer to Malé. The resorts are fewer and more spread out, and the sense of isolation and privacy is exceptional.

08

Exceptional Dining

The resorts of Baa Atoll offer some of the finest dining in the Maldives — the Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru has multiple restaurants including a celebrated overwater restaurant, and Amilla Maldives has a renowned food and beverage programme. The fresh seafood and international cuisine are exceptional.
