Things To Do in Carriacou

The best beaches, diving and island life on Grenada's unspoilt sister island.

Sandy Island

Sandy Island is a tiny, uninhabited sand island off the coast of Carriacou — one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. Accessible by water taxi from Hillsborough in about 15 minutes, the island has brilliant white sand, crystal-clear turquoise water and excellent snorkelling on the surrounding reef. It is one of the most photogenic spots in the entire Caribbean.

Diving & Snorkelling

Carriacou has some of the best diving and snorkelling in the Eastern Caribbean. The waters around the island are exceptionally clear and the reefs are largely undisturbed. The Sisters Rocks, off the south coast, are one of the best dive sites in the region — a series of underwater pinnacles covered in coral and teeming with marine life.

Hillsborough

Hillsborough is the charming capital of Carriacou — a small, colourful town with a beautiful bay, a relaxed atmosphere and a genuine sense of Caribbean life. The town has a small museum, a market, several restaurants and bars, and the ferry terminal for boats to and from Grenada. The bay is a popular anchorage for yachts.

Anse La Roche

Anse La Roche is one of the most beautiful and secluded beaches on Carriacou — a pristine stretch of white sand on the north coast, accessible only by boat or a short hike through the bush. The beach is largely undeveloped and has a wonderfully peaceful, off-the-beaten-track atmosphere.

Boat Building Heritage

Carriacou has a long tradition of wooden boat building — one of the last places in the Caribbean where traditional wooden schooners are still built by hand. The annual Carriacou Regatta, held in August, celebrates this heritage with races between traditional wooden boats. The nearby island of Petite Martinique is also a traditional boat-building community.

Carriacou Travel Guide

Carriacou is Grenada's largest sister island — a beautiful, unspoilt island about 40km north of the Grenada mainland, accessible by ferry (about 1.5 hours) or small plane (about 20 minutes). With a population of just 8,000, Carriacou has a genuinely off-the-beaten-track feel that is increasingly rare in the Caribbean.
