Flam is one of the most visited villages in Norway — and with good reason. Sitting at the very end of the Aurlandsfjord, surrounded by mountains rising steeply on three sides, it is a place of extraordinary natural beauty. But it is the Flamsbana railway that puts Flam on the map for most visitors, and it is one of the most remarkable engineering achievements in Norwegian history.
The Flamsbana was built between 1923 and 1940 to connect the isolated communities of the inner Sognefjord with the main Bergen–Oslo railway at Myrdal. The 20-kilometre route climbs 863 metres — an average gradient of 1 in 18, making it one of the steepest standard-gauge railways in the world. The construction required extraordinary ingenuity: 20 tunnels were blasted through the mountains, and one tunnel spirals 180 degrees inside the mountain to gain height. The result is a journey of breathtaking beauty.
The train stops at the Kjosfossen waterfall — one of the most powerful in Norway — where passengers can step out onto the platform and stand in the spray. In summer, a performer dressed as a Huldra (a mythical Norwegian forest spirit) dances on the rocks beside the waterfall, adding a touch of magic to an already extraordinary experience.
From Flam, boat trips run through the Naeroyfjord — the narrowest branch of Sognefjord and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cliffs close in to just 250 metres apart, rising hundreds of metres on either side, and the silence is broken only by the sound of waterfalls and birdsong. It is one of the most intimate fjord experiences in Norway.
The Stegastein viewpoint, a short drive above the village of Aurland (adjacent to Flam), is one of the most dramatic viewpoints in Norway. A cantilevered wooden platform projects 30 metres out from the cliff face at 650 metres above the fjord, offering a vertiginous view straight down to the water and across the surrounding mountains.

Flam sits at the very end of the Aurlandsfjord, surrounded by mountains on three sides. The reflections of the mountains in the still water, the tiny village against the backdrop of the peaks, and the play of light on the fjord at different times of day make this one of the most photogenic spots in Norway.
The Flamsdalen valley stretches inland from the village, following the course of the Flamselvi river through a landscape of waterfalls, farms and mountain scenery. Cycling and walking trails run the length of the valley, offering a peaceful alternative to the busier attractions around the village.
The famous "Norway in a Nutshell" route combines the Flamsbana railway, a fjord cruise through the Naeroyfjord, the Bergen Railway and a bus over the Stalheimskleiva mountain road — all in a single day. It is one of the most celebrated scenic journeys in the world and Flam is its centrepiece.
The Flam Railway Museum, located in the old station building, tells the story of the extraordinary engineering feat that created the Flamsbana. The construction of the railway between 1923 and 1940 required extraordinary ingenuity — the exhibits bring the story to life with photographs, models and original equipment.
