A Norwegian Fjords cruise is unlike anything else in travel. As your ship glides silently through the Geirangerfjord or Sognefjord, with waterfalls tumbling down sheer cliff faces on either side and snow-capped peaks reflected in the still water below, you will understand why this is one of the most sought-after cruise experiences in the world.
Most Norwegian Fjords cruises depart from Southampton or Newcastle, making them ideal for UK travellers who prefer not to fly. Fly-cruise options departing from Bergen are also popular. A typical 7-night itinerary visits Bergen, Flam, Geiranger, Olden and Stavanger — though longer itineraries venture further north to Tromso and the North Cape.
Bergen is the gateway to the fjords and a beautiful city in its own right. The colourful wooden houses of Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, line the old wharf and are one of Norway's most photographed sights. The fish market, Fløibanen funicular and surrounding mountains make Bergen a wonderful port of call.
Flam is one of the most popular stops on any fjords cruise. The Flamsbana railway — one of the steepest in the world — climbs through spectacular mountain scenery to Myrdal, offering views that are simply extraordinary. The village itself sits at the end of the Aurlandsfjord, surrounded by mountains on all sides.
Geirangerfjord is arguably the most dramatic fjord in Norway — a UNESCO World Heritage Site with sheer 1,400-metre cliffs, the famous Seven Sisters and Suitor waterfalls, and abandoned mountain farms clinging to the cliff faces. Sailing into Geiranger on a clear morning is a moment you will never forget.
The best time to cruise the Norwegian Fjords is May to September, when the days are long and the weather is at its most reliable. In June and July, you can experience the midnight sun — 24 hours of daylight that creates an otherworldly atmosphere. Winter cruises offer the chance to see the Northern Lights, though the fjords are often inaccessible due to ice.

Glide through Norway's most iconic fjord — a UNESCO World Heritage Site flanked by 1,400-metre cliffs, the thundering Seven Sisters waterfall and the solitary Suitor cascade. Most ships spend several hours here, giving you time to take it all in from the deck.
One of the world's steepest railway journeys, the Flamsbana climbs 863 metres through 20 tunnels from the fjordside village of Flam to the mountain station at Myrdal. The views of waterfalls, gorges and snow-capped peaks are extraordinary — an unmissable shore excursion.
Bergen's famous Bryggen wharf is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a row of colourful 14th-century wooden merchant houses lining the harbour. Wander the narrow alleyways behind the facades to discover craft shops, galleries and cafes tucked into centuries-old timber buildings.
From Bergen's city centre, the Fløibanen funicular whisks you up to Mount Fløyen at 320 metres in just eight minutes. The panoramic views over Bergen, the surrounding fjords and the seven mountains that ring the city are simply spectacular — and well worth the short ride.
Between late May and mid-July, the sun never fully sets over the Norwegian Fjords. Standing on deck at midnight watching golden light play across the water and mountains is one of the most surreal and beautiful experiences in travel — something you will never forget.
The Seven Sisters is one of Norway's most photographed natural wonders — seven separate streams plunging 250 metres down the cliff face into the Geirangerfjord. The best view is from the water as your ship passes, with the Suitor waterfall on the opposite cliff appearing to raise a bottle in a toast.
On winter cruises (November to February), the Norwegian Fjords offer some of the best Northern Lights viewing in Europe. Tromso and the North Cape are the prime locations — standing on deck as the aurora borealis dances across the sky above the dark fjords is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Alesund is one of Norway's most beautiful towns — rebuilt entirely in Art Nouveau style after a devastating fire in 1904. The colourful facades, ornate towers and intricate stonework make it a photographer's paradise. Climb the 418 steps of Aksla hill for a panoramic view over the town and surrounding islands.
