The best beaches, resorts and nightlife in Cancun's Hotel Zone.
The Hotel Zone is a 14-mile strip of Caribbean coastline with some of the finest beaches in Mexico. Playa Delfines, Playa Tortugas, Playa Langosta and Playa Caracol are among the best — powdery white sand, turquoise water and excellent facilities. The northern beaches have calmer water; the southern beaches have more powerful waves.
The Hotel Zone is home to some of the best all-inclusive resorts in the world — Moon Palace, Hyatt Ziva, Hard Rock, Riu and Iberostar among them. The all-inclusive concept was practically invented here, and the quality and value is exceptional. Most resorts have multiple restaurants, pools, water parks and entertainment programmes.
The Hotel Zone's nightlife strip is one of the most famous in the world. Coco Bongo — with its acrobatics, live music and non-stop entertainment — is the most iconic venue. Mandala, The City, Palazzo and Dady'O are all legendary. The clubs run until 5am or later, and the atmosphere is extraordinary.
The Nichupté Lagoon, behind the Hotel Zone, is a protected natural area perfect for water sports. Kayaking, jet skiing, paddleboarding and mangrove tours are all available. The lagoon is also home to crocodiles, which can be spotted on guided tours — a surprisingly wild experience just minutes from the resort strip.
The El Rey archaeological site, within the Hotel Zone itself, is a small but atmospheric Mayan ruin dating to around 900 AD. The site is home to dozens of iguanas, which have made it their home among the ancient stones. It's a fascinating contrast to the modern resort strip that surrounds it.
The Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera) is the heart of Cancun — a 14-mile strip of Caribbean coastline shaped like the number 7, lined with world-class all-inclusive resorts, restaurants, shopping malls and the most famous nightlife in Mexico.
The beaches are the main draw. Playa Delfines, at the southern tip of the Hotel Zone, is the most famous — home to the iconic Cancun sign and with stunning open views of the Caribbean. The northern beaches, around Playa Tortugas and Playa Langosta, have calmer water and are better for families. The southern beaches have more powerful waves and are popular with surfers.
The all-inclusive resorts of the Hotel Zone are among the best in the world. Moon Palace, Hyatt Ziva, Hard Rock, Riu and Iberostar offer extraordinary value — multiple restaurants, pools, water parks, entertainment and unlimited food and drink. The all-inclusive concept was practically invented in Cancun, and the quality has never been higher.
The nightlife is legendary. Coco Bongo — with its acrobatics, live music, confetti cannons and non-stop entertainment — is the most iconic venue in Cancun. Mandala, The City, Palazzo and Dady'O are all world-famous. The clubs run until 5am or later, and the atmosphere during Spring Break (late February to mid-April) is extraordinary.
The Hotel Zone is also surprisingly close to some excellent day trip destinations. Isla Mujeres is just 20 minutes by ferry. Chichen Itza is 2.5 hours by road. Tulum is 1.5 hours south. The Hotel Zone makes an excellent base for exploring the wider Yucatan Peninsula.
