Conch Bar Caves, wild flamingos, beautiful beaches and the lush 'Garden Island' of Turks & Caicos.
The Conch Bar Caves on Middle Caicos (accessible from North Caicos via the causeway) are the largest cave system in the Caribbean — a spectacular network of limestone caves with stalactites, stalagmites and underground lakes. The caves were used by the indigenous Lucayan people and later by pirates, and are now a protected national park. Guided tours are available and are a fascinating insight into the natural and human history of the islands.
North Caicos is home to a colony of wild flamingos — one of the most spectacular natural sights in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The flamingos can be seen at the saltwater ponds on the island, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon. North Caicos is also home to a wide variety of other bird life, making it an excellent destination for birdwatching.
Three Mary Cays is a beautiful beach and snorkelling spot on the north coast of North Caicos — a stunning stretch of white sand with crystal-clear water and excellent snorkelling on the reef just offshore. The beach is relatively undeveloped and uncrowded, giving it a wonderfully unspoilt atmosphere. The combination of the beach and the reef makes Three Mary Cays a perfect spot for a day out.
Wade's Green Plantation is the ruins of an 18th-century cotton plantation on North Caicos — one of the best-preserved plantation ruins in the Caribbean, with the remains of the great house, slave quarters and cotton gin still visible. The plantation is a fascinating and sobering reminder of the islands' colonial history. Guided tours are available from the local community.
North Caicos is accessible by a short ferry crossing from Providenciales (about 30 minutes) or by inter-island aircraft. North and Middle Caicos are connected by a causeway, making it easy to explore both islands in a single day trip. The islands are best explored by hire car, which is available from the ferry terminal. North Caicos is a perfect day trip from Providenciales.
