Beaches, wildlife and the dramatic southern tip of St Lucia.
Anse de Sables is a beautiful beach near Vieux Fort — a wide stretch of white sand on the Atlantic coast, with stronger winds than the Caribbean-facing beaches. The beach is one of the best spots on St Lucia for windsurfing and kite surfing, with consistent trade winds and a good selection of equipment hire. The beach has a wonderfully natural, unspoiled character and is far less crowded than the beaches in Rodney Bay.
The Maria Islands Nature Reserve is one of the most important wildlife sanctuaries in the Caribbean — a protected reserve on two small islands just off the coast of Vieux Fort. The islands are home to the St Lucia whiptail lizard and the St Lucia racer snake, both found nowhere else in the world. The islands are also an important nesting site for seabirds. Guided tours are available from the Vieux Fort area.
The waters around Vieux Fort and the Maria Islands are excellent for snorkelling and diving. The coral reefs around the Maria Islands are home to a wide variety of marine life, including sea turtles, rays and tropical fish. The area is less visited than the dive sites around the Pitons and Anse Chastanet, giving it a wonderfully unspoiled character.
Moule à Chique is the southernmost tip of St Lucia — a dramatic peninsula with a lighthouse and spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The views from the lighthouse are among the most dramatic on the island, with the Maria Islands visible just offshore and the Pitons visible in the distance to the north. The peninsula is a popular spot for birdwatching.
Vieux Fort is home to Hewanorra International Airport — the main international airport on St Lucia and the arrival point for most UK visitors. The airport is about 1.5–2 hours from Rodney Bay by road, passing through some of the most dramatic scenery on the island. Many visitors choose to stop in Vieux Fort or Soufrière on the way north, making the most of the journey.
Vieux Fort is the second largest town on St Lucia and the gateway to the south of the island — home to Hewanorra International Airport, the beautiful Anse de Sables beach and the dramatic Maria Islands Nature Reserve.
