The best diving, history and unspoiled nature on St Kitts's northwest coast.
Sandy Point has a beautiful, uncrowded beach on the northwest coast of St Kitts — a wide stretch of dark volcanic sand with calm, clear water. The beach is far less visited than those in Frigate Bay and Cockleshell Bay, giving it a wonderfully peaceful, unspoiled character. The snorkelling just offshore is excellent, with clear water and a variety of marine life.
Sandy Point is one of the best diving destinations on St Kitts. The area is home to some of the finest dive sites on the island, including the wreck of the River Taw — a 144-foot freighter that was deliberately sunk in 1985 to create an artificial reef. The wreck is now encrusted with coral and home to a wide variety of marine life. Several dive operators on the island offer trips to the Sandy Point dive sites.
Sandy Point is the nearest town to Brimstone Hill Fortress — the UNESCO World Heritage Site that is one of the most impressive colonial fortifications in the Caribbean. The fortress is just a short drive from Sandy Point and is one of the most rewarding attractions on the island. The views from the fortress over the northwest coast and Sandy Point are spectacular.
Sandy Point is the starting point for the hike up Mount Liamuiga — the dormant volcano that dominates the northern end of St Kitts, rising to 1,156 metres above sea level. The hike takes about 3–4 hours through lush rainforest and cloud forest, and offers spectacular views over the island and the surrounding Caribbean. The hike is best done with a local guide.
Sandy Point is one of the oldest settlements on St Kitts — a charming, historic town with a strong sense of local community. The town has a good selection of local restaurants and bars serving Kittitian cuisine. The area around Sandy Point is one of the most authentic and unspoiled parts of the island, away from the tourist developments of Frigate Bay and the Southeast Peninsula.
