Things To See at Brimstone Hill Fortress

The history, views and heritage of one of the Caribbean's most impressive fortifications.

The Fortress

Brimstone Hill Fortress is one of the most impressive colonial fortifications in the Americas — a vast complex of walls, bastions, barracks and batteries built by enslaved Africans under British direction between 1690 and 1790. The fortress was designed to protect the island's sugar plantations and was known as the 'Gibraltar of the West Indies'. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.

Fort George Citadel & Views

Fort George Citadel is the highest point of the Brimstone Hill complex — a magnificent structure offering spectacular 360-degree views over St Kitts, Nevis, Antigua, Montserrat, Saba and St Eustatius on a clear day. The views are among the most dramatic in the Caribbean. The citadel houses a fascinating museum with exhibits on the history of the fortress and the island.

History & Heritage

Brimstone Hill provides a fascinating and humbling insight into the colonial history of the Caribbean. The fortress was built by enslaved Africans and was the scene of a famous siege in 1782, when a French force of 8,000 men besieged the fortress for a month before the 350-strong British garrison surrendered. The fortress was returned to Britain the following year under the Treaty of Paris.

Mount Liamuiga Hiking

Mount Liamuiga is the dormant volcano that dominates the northern end of St Kitts — a magnificent peak rising to 1,156 metres above sea level. The hike to the crater rim takes about 3–4 hours through lush rainforest and offers spectacular views over the island and the surrounding Caribbean. The crater itself contains a small lake and is home to a variety of rare plants and animals.

Sandy Point & Northwest Coast

The northwest coast of St Kitts, near Brimstone Hill, is one of the most scenic and unspoiled parts of the island. Sandy Point is a charming historic town with a good selection of local restaurants and bars. The beaches on the northwest coast are less developed than those in Frigate Bay and Cockleshell Bay, with a more natural, unspoiled character.
