Ski Holidays Holiday Guide

Ski holidays are one of the great travel experiences — the combination of physical challenge, mountain scenery, adrenaline, fresh air and the unique social atmosphere of an alpine resort is unlike anything else in travel. Whether you are a first-timer nervous about the nursery slopes or an expert hunting off-piste powder, there is a ski destination perfectly suited to you.

The European Alps offer the greatest concentration of world-class ski resorts in the world — the French Alps (Chamonix, Val d'Isère, Méribel, Courchevel, Les Arcs, La Plagne, Tignes), the Austrian Alps (St Anton, Kitzbühel, Ischgl, Sölden, Zell am See), the Swiss Alps (Verbier, Zermatt, St Moritz, Davos, Saas-Fee) and the Italian Dolomites (Cortina d'Ampezzo, Madonna di Campiglio, Livigno, Courmayeur) all offer exceptional skiing, outstanding mountain restaurants and the legendary après-ski culture that makes European ski holidays so addictive.

North America offers a completely different ski experience — vast, uncrowded resorts with guaranteed powder snow, world-class facilities and the unique culture of the Canadian Rockies (Whistler, Banff, Lake Louise) and the American Rockies (Aspen, Vail, Park City, Jackson Hole). The powder snow of British Columbia and Colorado is some of the finest in the world.

Ski holidays from the UK are typically 7 or 14 nights, flying into the nearest airport (Geneva for the French and Swiss Alps, Innsbruck or Salzburg for Austria, Turin or Venice for Italy, Calgary for Banff, Vancouver for Whistler, Denver for Colorado) and transferring by coach or private transfer to the resort. Most packages include flights, accommodation, lift passes and ski hire; some include ski school.

Top 8 Things To Do in Ski Holidays

The resorts, runs, powder, après-ski and mountain experiences that make ski holidays the most exhilarating holidays on earth.

01

French Alps — The World's Greatest Ski Areas

The French Alps contain the world's largest linked ski areas — the Trois Vallées (Courchevel, Méribel, Val Thorens — 600km of pistes), the Paradiski (Les Arcs, La Plagne — 425km), the Espace Killy (Val d'Isère, Tignes — 300km) and the Portes du Soleil (Morzine, Avoriaz — 650km). The resorts range from purpose-built high-altitude stations (Val Thorens at 2,300m, guaranteed snow) to charming traditional villages (Morzine, Les Gets). Chamonix, in the shadow of Mont Blanc, is the most famous ski town in the world and the home of extreme off-piste skiing.

02

Austrian Alps — Charm, Culture and Legendary Après-Ski

The Austrian Alps offer a completely different ski experience to France — charming traditional villages with onion-domed churches, excellent food and drink, and the most legendary après-ski in the world. St Anton am Arlberg is the après-ski capital of the Alps — the Mooserwirt and Krazy Kanguruh bars are the stuff of ski holiday legend. Kitzbühel is the most glamorous resort in Austria, home of the Hahnenkamm downhill race (the most prestigious in the World Cup circuit). Ischgl is famous for its season-opening and closing concerts (past performers include Elton John and Taylor Swift).

03

Swiss Alps — Luxury, Scenery and the Matterhorn

The Swiss Alps offer the most dramatic mountain scenery in Europe and the most luxurious ski resorts in the world. Zermatt, in the shadow of the Matterhorn, is the most iconic ski resort in Switzerland — car-free, extraordinarily beautiful and with skiing that extends to 3,883m (year-round skiing on the Klein Matterhorn glacier). Verbier is the most fashionable resort in Switzerland, with challenging off-piste terrain and a vibrant nightlife. St Moritz is the original luxury ski resort — the birthplace of winter tourism and still the most glamorous address in the Alps.

04

Italian Dolomites — The Most Beautiful Mountains in the Alps

The Italian Dolomites are the most visually spectacular mountains in the Alps — dramatic pink and orange limestone towers rising from the snow, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the backdrop to some of the most beautiful ski runs in the world. The Dolomiti Superski pass covers 1,200km of pistes across 12 ski areas. Cortina d'Ampezzo is the most glamorous resort in Italy, host of the 2026 Winter Olympics. The Sella Ronda — a 26km circuit around the Sella massif linking four valleys — is one of the great ski touring routes in the Alps.

05

Whistler, Canada — North America's Greatest Resort

Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia is the largest ski resort in North America — two mountains (Whistler and Blackcomb), 8,171 acres of skiable terrain, 200+ marked runs, 16 alpine bowls and three glaciers. The resort receives an average of 11m of snow per year and is famous for its consistent powder conditions. The Peak 2 Peak Gondola (connecting the two mountains at 436m above the valley floor) is the longest unsupported lift span in the world. Whistler village is one of the best ski resort villages in the world — pedestrianised, lively and with excellent restaurants and bars.

06

Colorado & Utah — The Finest Powder in the World

Colorado and Utah are home to some of the most famous ski resorts in the world — Aspen (four mountains, the most glamorous resort in America), Vail (the largest single ski mountain in the USA), Breckenridge, Steamboat Springs and Telluride in Colorado; Park City, Deer Valley and Alta/Snowbird in Utah. Utah's 'Greatest Snow on Earth' slogan is not marketing hyperbole — the Great Salt Lake effect produces an extraordinary quantity of light, dry powder snow. Park City hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics; Deer Valley is ski-only (no snowboarders) and consistently rated the best ski resort in America for service.

07

Ski School — From First Turns to Off-Piste Expert

Ski school is one of the best investments you can make on a ski holiday — whether you are a complete beginner taking your first nervous steps on the nursery slope or an intermediate skier wanting to unlock the off-piste terrain. Group lessons (typically 2–3 hours per morning for 5–6 days) are the most affordable option and are excellent for beginners and children. Private lessons (1–2 hours with a dedicated instructor) are better for faster progress and specific technique improvement. Most resorts offer specialist courses: moguls, off-piste, race training and freestyle. Book ski school in advance — the best instructors fill up quickly.

08

Après-Ski — The Art of the Mountain Bar

Après-ski is as much a part of the ski holiday experience as the skiing itself — the ritual of stopping for a drink (vin chaud, Glühwein, Jägermeister, beer) at a mountain bar or terrace restaurant at the end of the ski day, still in ski boots, watching the last skiers come down the mountain as the sun sets. The best après-ski in the world is in Austria (St Anton's Mooserwirt, Ischgl's Trofana Alm), but every ski resort has its own version. The French have mountain restaurants (refuges) with extraordinary food; the Swiss have cosy chalets with fondue and raclette; the Canadians have craft beer and live music.
