Boracay Holiday Guide

Boracay is one of the most famous beach destinations in Asia — a small island (10km long, 1km wide) in the Visayas with one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. White Beach, on the western coast, is a 4km arc of powdery white sand and crystal-clear turquoise water that consistently ranks among the finest beaches in Asia and the world.

Boracay was closed for six months in 2018 by President Duterte for environmental rehabilitation — the island had become severely overcrowded and polluted. It reopened in October 2018 with strict environmental controls, reduced hotel capacity and a ban on motorised vehicles on the beach. The rehabilitation has been largely successful — Boracay is cleaner, quieter and better managed than before the closure.

The island has three distinct areas. Station 1 (the northern end of White Beach) is the most beautiful and least developed — the sand is finest here and the water clearest. Station 2 (D'Mall area) is the main commercial hub — restaurants, bars, shops and watersports. Station 3 (the southern end) is the most budget-friendly. Bulabog Beach on the east coast is the best kitesurfing and windsurfing spot in the Philippines, with consistent trade winds from October to May.

Top 8 Things To Do in Boracay

The powdery white sand, legendary sunsets, kitesurfing, island hopping and vibrant beach life that make Boracay one of the finest beach destinations in Asia.

01

White Beach — One of Asia's Finest

White Beach is the reason people come to Boracay — a 4km arc of powdery white sand (the sand is made of coral, not quartz, giving it its extraordinary softness and whiteness) and crystal-clear turquoise water. The beach is divided into three stations: Station 1 (the northern end, the finest sand and least developed), Station 2 (D'Mall, the commercial hub) and Station 3 (the southern end, most budget-friendly). The beach is lined with resorts, restaurants and bars — but the sand is wide enough that it never feels overcrowded.

02

White Beach Sunset — One of Asia's Most Beautiful

The sunset from White Beach is one of the most beautiful in Asia — the sun drops into the Sibuyan Sea directly in front of the beach, turning the sky orange, pink and purple and reflecting on the calm water. The best sunset spots are the northern end of Station 1 (the least crowded), the Willy's Rock (a small rock formation at the northern end of the beach with a small shrine) and the various beach bars along the beach. The sunset is best from November to May when the sky is clear.

03

Bulabog Beach — Kitesurfing Capital of the Philippines

Bulabog Beach, on the east coast of Boracay, is the best kitesurfing and windsurfing spot in the Philippines — a long, shallow beach exposed to the Habagat (southwest monsoon) from June to September and the Amihan (northeast trade wind) from October to May. The Amihan season (October to May) is the best for kitesurfing — consistent 15–25 knot winds and flat water. Numerous kitesurfing schools offer lessons for beginners. The Boracay International Funboard Cup (held annually in January) is one of the most prestigious windsurfing events in Asia.

04

Island Hopping — Crocodile Island & Crystal Cove

Boracay's island hopping tours visit the best snorkelling and diving sites around the island — Crocodile Island (named for its shape, not its inhabitants — excellent snorkelling with turtles, reef fish and coral), Crystal Cove Island (a small island with two sea caves and crystal-clear water), Puka Shell Beach (a quieter, less developed beach on the northern tip of Boracay) and the Magic Island (cliff jumping). Tours depart from the beach and cost around £15–25 per person including snorkelling equipment.

05

Puka Shell Beach — Boracay's Quieter Side

Puka Shell Beach, on the northern tip of Boracay, is the island's second beach — a 800-metre stretch of coarser sand (covered in puka shells, used to make the jewellery sold throughout the island) with rougher water and far fewer tourists than White Beach. The beach has a handful of simple restaurants and bars. It is best reached by tricycle from D'Mall (15 minutes) or by boat on an island-hopping tour. Puka Shell Beach is excellent for those wanting to escape the crowds of White Beach.

06

Ariel's Point — Cliff Jumping & Snorkelling

Ariel's Point, a small headland 30 minutes by boat from Boracay, is the best day trip from the island — a series of cliff jumping platforms (from 3 to 15 metres), excellent snorkelling, kayaking and paddleboarding, and a barbecue lunch included in the price. The all-inclusive day trip (around £35–45 per person) departs from White Beach in the morning and returns in the afternoon. Ariel's Point is one of the most popular activities in Boracay — book in advance in high season.

07

Mount Luho — Panoramic Views Over Boracay

Mount Luho, the highest point on Boracay (100m), offers panoramic views over the entire island — White Beach to the west, Bulabog Beach to the east and the surrounding islands. The summit is reached by ATV (all-terrain vehicle) from D'Mall — a popular activity that takes about 30 minutes each way. The views from the top are extraordinary, particularly at sunset. The ATV tour costs around £15–20 per person and includes a guide.

08

D'Mall & Boracay Nightlife

D'Mall, in the Station 2 area, is the commercial heart of Boracay — a maze of restaurants, bars, shops, massage parlours and watersports operators. The beachfront restaurants along White Beach serve excellent seafood (grilled fish, prawns, squid) at very reasonable prices. The nightlife is centred on the beach bars (Bom Bom, Summer Place, Epic) and the clubs in D'Mall. Boracay's nightlife is lively but not as intense as it was before the 2018 rehabilitation — the island is quieter and more family-friendly than before.
