The Riviera Maya has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world — a 130km stretch of white sand and turquoise water, from Puerto Morelos in the north to Tulum in the south. The beaches are lined with palm trees and the water is warm, calm and crystal-clear. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest in the world, runs just offshore, providing excellent snorkelling and diving.
The Riviera Maya is home to some of the finest all-inclusive resorts in the world. The Barcelo Maya Complex, Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya, Iberostar Paraiso, Dreams Riviera Cancun and Grand Palladium Colonial are among the most acclaimed. The quality and variety of the all-inclusive offering on the Riviera Maya is exceptional — from vast resort complexes to intimate boutique properties.
Akumal is one of the best places in Mexico to snorkel with sea turtles. The bay at Akumal is home to a large population of green and loggerhead turtles, which can be seen feeding on the seagrass in the shallow water. The snorkelling is excellent, with clear water and a wide variety of marine life. Akumal is about 30 minutes north of Tulum.
Xcaret is a spectacular eco-archaeological park on the Riviera Maya — one of the most popular attractions in Mexico. The park has underground rivers, coral reefs, Mayan ruins, a butterfly pavilion, a sea turtle sanctuary and a spectacular evening show. Xel-Ha, the world's largest natural aquarium, is a beautiful natural inlet perfect for snorkelling with tropical fish.
Cobá is a magnificent Mayan city in the jungle, about 45 minutes inland from Tulum. Unlike most Mayan sites, visitors can still climb the Nohoch Mul pyramid — the tallest in the Yucatan Peninsula — for spectacular views over the jungle canopy. The site is surrounded by jungle and connected by ancient stone causeways. It is one of the most impressive Mayan sites in Mexico.
