Things To Do in Isla Mujeres

The best beaches, whale sharks and island experiences near Cancun.

Playa Norte

Playa Norte is one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico — a stunning stretch of white sand with calm, shallow, turquoise water on the northern tip of Isla Mujeres. The beach is lined with beach bars and restaurants, and has a wonderfully relaxed, Caribbean atmosphere. The water is exceptionally calm and clear, making it ideal for swimming and snorkelling.

Swimming with Whale Sharks

Isla Mujeres is one of the best places in the world to swim with whale sharks — the largest fish in the sea. Between June and September, hundreds of whale sharks gather in the waters around Isla Mujeres to feed on fish eggs. Boat tours from the island take visitors out to snorkel alongside these magnificent, gentle giants in one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in the world.

Garrafon Natural Reef Park

Garrafon Natural Reef Park is a beautiful natural reef park on the southern tip of Isla Mujeres — an excellent snorkelling and diving destination with clear water, vibrant coral reefs and a wide variety of marine life. The park also has a zip line, kayaking, a swimming pool and a restaurant with spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea.

Island Life & Atmosphere

Isla Mujeres has a wonderfully relaxed, laid-back atmosphere that makes it a perfect escape from the busier resort areas. The island is small enough to explore by golf cart — a popular way to get around. The downtown area has a colourful, charming character, with excellent restaurants serving fresh seafood, bars with Caribbean music and friendly local people.

Getting to Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is just 20 minutes from Cancun by ferry. Ferries depart from Puerto Juarez, near the northern end of the Hotel Zone, and from the Hotel Zone itself. The crossing takes about 20 minutes and ferries run frequently throughout the day.
