Things To Do in Cozumel

The best diving, snorkelling and island experiences at one of the world's great dive destinations.

World-Class Diving

Cozumel is one of the world's premier diving destinations — Jacques Cousteau declared it one of the finest diving spots in the world in the 1960s. The coral reefs around Cozumel are part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest in the world, and are home to an extraordinary variety of marine life including sea turtles, eagle rays, nurse sharks, barracuda and hundreds of species of tropical fish.

Snorkelling

Cozumel is also one of the finest snorkelling destinations in the Caribbean. The shallow reefs around the island are teeming with marine life and the water is exceptionally clear. Playa Palancar, Playa Chen Rio and Playa San Francisco are among the best snorkelling beaches. Glass-bottom boat tours are also available for those who prefer to stay dry.

San Gervasio Mayan Ruins

San Gervasio is the most important Mayan archaeological site on Cozumel — a sacred site dedicated to the goddess Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of fertility and medicine. The site was an important pilgrimage destination for Mayan women from across the Yucatan Peninsula. The ruins are well-preserved and set in a beautiful jungle environment.

Beaches & Island Life

Cozumel has some of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico — pristine stretches of white sand with crystal-clear water. Playa Palancar, on the south-west coast, is one of the finest. The main town, San Miguel de Cozumel, is a colourful, lively place with excellent restaurants, bars and shops. The island has a wonderfully relaxed, Caribbean atmosphere.

Getting to Cozumel

Cozumel is accessible by ferry from Playa del Carmen — a 45-minute crossing that runs frequently throughout the day. The island also has its own international airport with direct flights from the USA and connections from Cancun. Most visitors to the Riviera Maya visit Cozumel on a day trip from Playa del Carmen, though the island also has a good selection of hotels for those who want to stay.
