Things To Do in Puerto Plata

The best waterfalls, history and beaches on the Dominican Republic's north coast.

27 Waterfalls of Damajagua

The 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua are one of the most extraordinary natural attractions in the Caribbean. Visitors hike through the jungle, swim through turquoise pools and slide down natural rock chutes between a series of spectacular cascades. The full 27-waterfall tour takes about 3 hours. It's consistently rated one of the best day trips in the Dominican Republic.

Mount Isabel de Torres Cable Car

A cable car runs to the summit of Mount Isabel de Torres, 793 metres above Puerto Plata. The views from the top — over the city, the coast and the Atlantic Ocean — are extraordinary. The summit has a botanical garden, a Christ the Redeemer statue and several walking trails through the cloud forest.

Playa Dorada

Playa Dorada is the main resort beach at Puerto Plata — a long stretch of golden sand with several all-inclusive hotels, water sports facilities and beach bars. The beach is well-maintained and the water is warm and clear. Several of the Dominican Republic's most established all-inclusive resorts are located here.

Victorian Architecture & Fortaleza San Felipe

Puerto Plata has some of the most beautiful Victorian gingerbread architecture in the Caribbean — colourful wooden houses with ornate fretwork, built by European merchants in the late 19th century. The Fortaleza San Felipe, a 16th-century Spanish fortress at the harbour entrance, is one of the oldest in the Americas.

Amber Museum

The Dominican Republic is one of the world's main sources of amber, and Puerto Plata's Amber Museum has one of the finest collections in the world. Some pieces contain prehistoric insects, plants and even small animals preserved in the resin for millions of years. The museum is housed in a beautiful Victorian mansion in the town centre.
