Things To Do at Crane Beach

The best beaches, views and experiences on the south-east coast.

Crane Beach Swimming

Crane Beach is consistently ranked among the world's most beautiful beaches. The sand has a distinctive pink hue — caused by crushed coral mixed with the white sand — and the water is a beautiful turquoise. The beach is backed by dramatic cliffs, which give it a setting that is genuinely unlike any other beach in Barbados. The waves are moderate, making it good for both swimming and surfing.

The Crane Resort

The Crane Resort, perched on the cliffs above the beach, is the oldest operating hotel in the Caribbean, dating to 1887. Even if you're not staying here, it's worth visiting for the extraordinary views from the clifftop terrace and the most photographed pool in Barbados — a stunning infinity pool that appears to merge with the sea below.

Clifftop Views & Photography

The cliffs above Crane Beach offer some of the most dramatic views in Barbados. The combination of the pink sand, turquoise water, crashing waves and the historic Crane Resort creates a setting that is genuinely spectacular. The light is best in the late afternoon, when the pink hue of the sand is most pronounced.

Foul Bay

Just south of Crane Beach, Foul Bay is one of the most beautiful and least visited beaches in Barbados. A wild, secluded stretch of sand with powerful Atlantic waves, it's popular with locals but largely unknown to tourists. The swimming is not safe due to the strong currents, but the scenery is extraordinary.

South-East Coast Exploration

The south-east coast of Barbados, around Crane Beach, is one of the least developed parts of the island. The landscape is dramatic — cliffs, coves and wild beaches that are completely different from the resort-lined west coast. Renting a car and exploring the coast road between Crane Beach and Oistins is one of the best drives in Barbados.

Crane Beach Travel Guide

Crane Beach is consistently ranked among the world's most beautiful beaches, and it's easy to see why. A dramatic sweep of pink-hued sand backed by limestone cliffs, with turquoise water and moderate Atlantic waves, it has a setting that is genuinely unlike any other beach in Barbados.

The pink colour of the sand is caused by crushed coral mixed with the white sand — the same phenomenon as Harbour Island in the Bahamas, though less intense. The effect is most pronounced in the late afternoon light, when the sand glows a warm rose pink against the turquoise water.

The Crane Resort, perched on the cliffs above the beach, is the oldest operating hotel in the Caribbean, dating to 1887. The resort has been expanded and modernised over the years, but it retains its historic character. The clifftop terrace has extraordinary views over the beach and the sea, and the infinity pool — which appears to merge with the ocean below — is the most photographed in Barbados. Day passes are available for non-guests.

The beach itself is excellent for both swimming and surfing. The waves are moderate — more powerful than the west coast but less extreme than Bathsheba — which makes it suitable for a wider range of swimmers. The beach is never as crowded as the west coast beaches, which adds to its appeal.

Foul Bay, just south of Crane Beach, is one of the most beautiful and least visited beaches in Barbados. A wild, secluded stretch of sand with powerful Atlantic waves, it's popular with locals but largely unknown to tourists. Crane Beach is about 30 minutes from Bridgetown and 20 minutes from the airport. It makes an excellent day trip from anywhere on the island.
