Eagle Beach has some of the calmest, clearest water in the Caribbean. The gentle slope of the seabed makes it ideal for swimming at any ability level. The sand is so white and fine it stays cool even in the midday sun — a rare luxury in the tropics.
The reef just offshore from Eagle Beach is home to an impressive variety of marine life. Parrotfish, angelfish, sergeant majors and the occasional sea turtle are regular sightings. You can snorkel straight from the beach — no boat trip required.
The iconic Fofoti trees — wind-sculpted divi-divi trees that grow only on this beach — are one of the most photographed subjects in the Caribbean. At sunrise and sunset, the light here is extraordinary. Bring a camera and allow more time than you think you'll need.
Eagle Beach is one of the most important sea turtle nesting sites in the Caribbean. Four species — leatherback, hawksbill, green and loggerhead — nest here between March and October. Arrive at dawn for the best chance of spotting hatchlings making their way to the sea.
The southern end of Eagle Beach merges into the quieter Manchebo Beach, home to the Manchebo Beach Resort & Spa. The spa here is one of the best on the island — a perfect half-day treat to combine with a morning on the beach.
Eagle Beach is the beach that Aruba is famous for — and it more than lives up to its reputation. Consistently voted the best beach in the Caribbean and regularly appearing in global top-ten lists, it's the kind of place that makes you feel like you've finally found what you were looking for.
The beach itself is genuinely extraordinary. Two miles of powder-white sand, so fine and pale it almost looks like snow, stretching along the island's south-west coast. The water is a shade of turquoise that seems almost artificially vivid — calm, warm and crystal clear. Unlike many famous Caribbean beaches, Eagle Beach is wide enough that it never feels crowded, even during the peak December to April season.
The Fofoti trees are the beach's most iconic feature. These wind-sculpted divi-divi trees, bent permanently westward by Aruba's constant north-east trade winds, are found only on this stretch of beach and have become the symbol of the island. At sunrise and sunset, with the light turning golden and the trees silhouetted against the sky, the scene is one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean.
Sea turtle nesting is another extraordinary feature of Eagle Beach. Four species — leatherback, hawksbill, green and loggerhead — use the beach as a nesting site between March and October. The Aruba Sea Turtle Conservation programme monitors the nests and organises guided dawn walks during the hatching season. If you're visiting between June and October, this is an experience not to be missed.
The hotels along Eagle Beach are deliberately low-rise and low-density, which is why the beach retains its uncrowded, natural feel. Manchebo Beach Resort & Spa at the southern end is one of the island's finest boutique hotels — adults-only, beautifully designed and with an excellent spa. Amsterdam Manor, a Dutch colonial-style hotel, is another excellent option.
Eagle Beach is about 10 minutes by car from Palm Beach and 15 minutes from Oranjestad. There are no beach vendors here, which adds to the peaceful atmosphere. Bring your own snacks and drinks, or head to one of the small beach bars at the northern end of the strip.
