Argentina Holiday Guide

Argentina is one of the most extraordinary and diverse countries on earth — a nation of 2.8 million square kilometres stretching from the subtropical jungles of the north to the wind-scoured tip of Patagonia, from the Andean peaks of the west to the vast pampas grasslands of the east. It is a country of extraordinary natural beauty, world-class food and wine, passionate culture and some of the warmest and most welcoming people in South America.

Buenos Aires, the capital, is one of the great cities of the world — a European-influenced metropolis of 15 million people where tango was born, where the world's finest beef is grilled over open fires, where the Recoleta cemetery rivals Paris's Père Lachaise for architectural grandeur, and where the nightlife doesn't start until midnight. Patagonia, in the south, is one of the last great wildernesses on earth — the jagged granite towers of Torres del Paine, the vast Perito Moreno Glacier, the penguin colonies of the Valdés Peninsula and the end-of-the-world atmosphere of Ushuaia.

Argentina is 13–14 hours from the UK (direct flights from London Heathrow with Aerolíneas Argentinas and British Airways to Buenos Aires Ezeiza). The best time to visit is October–April (southern hemisphere spring and summer). Patagonia is best November–March; Buenos Aires is pleasant year-round.

Top 8 Things To Do in Argentina

The glaciers, waterfalls, tango, steak, wine and wilderness that make Argentina one of the most extraordinary destinations on earth.

01

Buenos Aires — Tango, Steak & European Grandeur

Buenos Aires is one of the great cities of the world — a European-influenced metropolis where tango was born in the working-class neighbourhoods of La Boca and San Telmo, where the world's finest beef is grilled over quebracho wood fires in parrillas that have barely changed in a century, and where the Recoleta cemetery (home to Evita Perón's tomb) rivals Paris for architectural grandeur. The city's neighbourhoods — Palermo's boutiques and restaurants, San Telmo's antique markets, La Boca's colourful Caminito — reward days of exploration.

02

Patagonia — Glaciers, Granite Towers & the End of the World

Patagonia is one of the last great wildernesses on earth. The jagged granite towers of Torres del Paine (Chile) and Los Glaciares National Park (Argentina) are among the most dramatic landscapes on the planet. The Perito Moreno Glacier — one of the few advancing glaciers in the world — calves house-sized chunks of ice into Lago Argentino with a thunderous crack. Ushuaia, the world's southernmost city, sits at the tip of the continent with the Beagle Channel and Antarctica beyond.

03

Iguazu Falls — One of the World's Great Natural Wonders

Iguazu Falls is one of the most spectacular natural wonders on earth — a 2.7km-wide curtain of 275 individual waterfalls on the border of Argentina and Brazil, wider than Victoria Falls and taller than Niagara. The Argentine side offers the most dramatic experience: the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) walkway puts you directly above the most powerful section of the falls, surrounded by spray, rainbows and the deafening roar of 1,700 cubic metres of water per second.

04

Mendoza — World-Class Malbec in the Shadow of the Andes

Mendoza is Argentina's wine capital and one of the world's great wine regions — a sun-drenched city at 750m altitude in the foothills of the Andes, surrounded by vineyards producing the Malbec that has made Argentina famous. The wine route takes in dozens of bodegas from small family operations to the grand estates of Catena Zapata and Achaval Ferrer. The backdrop of the snow-capped Andes — including Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Americas at 6,961m — is extraordinary.

05

Bariloche — Swiss Lakes, Ski Slopes & Chocolate

San Carlos de Bariloche is Argentina's most beautiful resort town — a Swiss-style city on the shores of Lago Nahuel Huapi in the Lake District of Patagonia, surrounded by snow-capped Andean peaks, ancient forests and some of the finest skiing in South America. The Cerro Catedral ski resort is the largest in South America; in summer the same mountains offer world-class trekking, mountain biking and kayaking. The city is also famous for its Swiss-influenced chocolate shops.

06

Salta — Colonial Architecture & Dramatic Andean Landscapes

Salta, in the northwest of Argentina, is one of the best-preserved colonial cities in South America — a city of pink-tinged colonial buildings, cobblestone streets and baroque churches in a valley surrounded by dramatic Andean landscapes. The Tren a las Nubes (Train to the Clouds) climbs to 4,220m through some of the most spectacular scenery in South America. The Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers extraordinary coloured rock formations and indigenous Andean culture.

07

Pampas & Gaucho Culture — Estancias and the World's Finest Beef

The pampas — the vast grasslands that stretch across central Argentina — are the heartland of gaucho culture, Argentina's answer to the American cowboy. Estancias (ranches) offer the chance to experience this culture first-hand: horse riding across the plains, watching gauchos demonstrate their skills with lassos and boleadoras, and eating asado (Argentine barbecue) cooked over an open fire. The beef is the finest in the world — grass-fed, aged and grilled over quebracho wood.

08

Valdés Peninsula — Penguins, Whales & Sea Lions

The Valdés Peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Patagonian coast, is one of the world's great wildlife destinations. Southern right whales come to breed in the sheltered bays between June and December; Magellanic penguins nest in their hundreds of thousands at Punta Tombo; elephant seals and sea lions haul out on the beaches; and orcas hunt sea lions in the surf at Punta Norte in a behaviour seen nowhere else on earth. The peninsula is 1,400km south of Buenos Aires.
