Things To Do at Jabberwock Beach

Kitesurfing, windsurfing, plane spotting and wide open beach.

Kitesurfing & Windsurfing

Jabberwock Beach is Antigua's premier kitesurfing and windsurfing destination. The consistent north-east trade winds, shallow water and wide open beach make it ideal for both beginners and experienced riders. Several operators offer lessons and equipment hire. The best conditions are typically December to June.

Swimming & Beach

Despite its reputation as a watersports beach, Jabberwock is also a great swimming beach. The water is warm and clear, and the beach is wide and well-maintained. It's less crowded than Dickenson Bay, which means more space and a more relaxed atmosphere. The sand is slightly coarser than the west coast beaches but the setting is beautiful.

Plane Spotting

Jabberwock Beach sits directly under the flight path for V.C. Bird International Airport, which is just a mile away. Watching the planes come in low over the beach is a surprisingly entertaining experience — the contrast between the aircraft and the turquoise water is quite spectacular. It's become something of a tourist attraction in its own right.

Snorkelling

The reef at the northern end of Jabberwock Beach offers decent snorkelling, with a good variety of reef fish and the occasional sea turtle. The water is clearest in the morning before the trade winds pick up. Bring your own gear — there's limited hire available on the beach.

Sunset Views

Jabberwock faces north-west, which means the sunsets here are excellent — particularly in the winter months when the sun sets further to the north. The combination of the beach, the trade wind clouds and the evening light makes for some spectacular photography.

Jabberwock Beach Travel Guide

Jabberwock Beach is Antigua's open secret. While the tourists pile into Dickenson Bay, the kitesurfers, windsurfers and those in the know head to Jabberwock — a long, wide beach on the island's north coast that catches the full force of the north-east trade winds.

The beach stretches for about a mile and is noticeably wider than most of Antigua's beaches. The sand is slightly coarser than the west coast, but the setting is beautiful — a long arc of beach with the green hills of the island behind and the open Atlantic ahead. The water is warm, clear and shallow for a good distance from the shore.

The trade winds here are consistent and reliable, which makes Jabberwock the best kitesurfing and windsurfing beach on the island. Several operators run lessons and equipment hire from the beach, and on a good day you'll see a dozen or more kites in the air at once. The conditions are best from December to June, when the north-east trades are at their strongest.

One of the more unusual attractions at Jabberwock is the plane spotting. The beach sits directly under the flight path for V.C. Bird International Airport, which is just a mile to the west. The planes come in low over the beach — close enough to feel the engine noise — and the contrast between the aircraft and the turquoise water is genuinely spectacular. It's become something of a talking point among visitors.

Jabberwock is about 10 minutes from the airport and 15 minutes from St John's, which makes it one of the most accessible beaches on the island. It's also close to Dickenson Bay, so it's easy to combine both in a day.
