Things To Do in English Harbour

History, hiking, sailing and some of the best sunsets in the Caribbean.

Nelson's Dockyard

The centrepiece of English Harbour and one of the Caribbean's most remarkable historical sites. The only working Georgian dockyard in the world, it was used by the British Royal Navy from the 1720s and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beautifully restored buildings house museums, restaurants, boutique hotels and a working marina.

Shirley Heights Lookout

Perched 490 feet above the harbour, Shirley Heights offers the most spectacular views in Antigua — a sweeping panorama across English Harbour, Falmouth Harbour and the surrounding hills. Every Sunday evening, the famous Shirley Heights party draws locals and visitors alike for steel drum music, barbecue and some of the best sunsets in the Caribbean.

Fort Berkeley

Built in 1704 to defend the entrance to English Harbour, Fort Berkeley is a short walk from the dockyard along a narrow spit of land. The fort itself is largely ruined but the setting is extraordinary — the views back across the harbour and out to sea are worth the walk alone.

Hiking the National Park

English Harbour sits within the Nelson's Dockyard National Park, which covers the entire southern peninsula of Antigua. There are several excellent hiking trails through the park, including the route up to Shirley Heights and the path along the headland to Indian Creek. The birdlife here is exceptional.

Dockyard Dining

The dockyard area has some of Antigua's best restaurants. The Copper & Lumber Store Hotel serves excellent Caribbean and international cuisine in a stunning historic setting. The Dockyard Bakery is the go-to for breakfast. For sundowners, the Admiral's Inn terrace overlooking the marina is hard to beat.

English Harbour Travel Guide

English Harbour is unlike anywhere else in the Caribbean. While most of Antigua's appeal is about beaches and resorts, English Harbour offers something completely different — a deep, atmospheric dive into the island's colonial history, set against one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the world.

Nelson's Dockyard is the main draw, and it deserves every superlative thrown at it. The dockyard was established by the British Royal Navy in the 1720s and served as the principal base for naval operations in the Eastern Caribbean for over a century. Admiral Horatio Nelson was stationed here from 1784 to 1787 — he famously hated the posting, describing Antigua as a "vile hole" — but the dockyard that bears his name is anything but. The Georgian buildings have been meticulously restored and now house a fascinating museum, several excellent restaurants, a boutique hotel and a working marina that hosts some of the most beautiful yachts in the world.

Shirley Heights is the other essential experience. The drive up through the national park takes about 10 minutes from the dockyard, and the views from the top are genuinely breathtaking — a 360-degree panorama across both harbours, the surrounding hills and the open Caribbean Sea. On a clear day you can see Guadeloupe to the south. The Sunday evening party here is legendary: steel drum bands, barbecue, rum punch and a sunset that will stay with you for years.

The area around English Harbour is also excellent for sailing. The harbour itself is one of the most protected natural anchorages in the Caribbean, which is why the Royal Navy chose it in the first place. Today it hosts Antigua Sailing Week every April/May — the Caribbean's premier yachting regatta — and the marina is busy with charter yachts year-round.

English Harbour is about 45 minutes from the airport and 30 minutes from St John's. It's a very different experience from the beach resorts of the north coast, but it's one of the most rewarding parts of any Antigua holiday.
